A WIC Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Under the supervision of the WIC breastfeeding coordinator, responsibilities of this role include: .Successful completion of breastfeeding training to become a peer counselor; Counseling WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, home visits and/or hospital visits at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC agency; Managing a caseload of WIC clients and making routine and periodic contacts with assigned clients; Providing basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers and assisting them with getting a good start with breastfeeding; Assisting mothers in handling common breastfeeding concerns; and, keeping accurate records of all contacts made with WIC clients. This position also refers mothers according to clinic-established protocols, to the WIC nutritionist, breastfeeding coordinator, or lactation consultant The ideal candidate will have successful experience breastfeeding at least one baby, be enthusiastic about breastfeeding, and committed to helping other mothers enjoy a positive experience. This role should also have a telephone and be willing to make phone calls from home. Nursing babies welcome.
