Duties
The Computer Engineer provides engineering experience in support of the systems engineering function for National Airspace System (NAS) systems and resolves complex problems related to the introduction of new systems into the NAS. Performs multiple, varying, and complex assignments and plans the implementation of projects/programs under limited direction of a manager, project/program manager, or more experienced engineer.
Applies experience and advanced knowledge of computer engineering principles, theories, and concepts applicable to his/her discipline to accomplish assignments and to develop plans and techniques to improve programs and policies. Possesses knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
Provides national level technical assistance to in-service improvements, analysis, design and implementation of system-wide hardware/firmware/software modifications, service life extension, and failure analysis/support in response to NAS related problems beyond the assigned repair capability of the field.
Provides support to the NAS configuration management; quality assurance; development and issuance of associated national technical directives and maintenance guidance. Analyzes and evaluates operational readiness and/or supportability of new NAS systems for deployment and technical support to new system acquisition efforts. Analyzes system performance and fault information from field facilities to identify causes of system failures.
Defines, plans, and organizes assigned resources to accomplish organizational objectives. Develops technical solutions to improve/enhance system performance and lengthen service life. Determines technical requirements for functional improvements or major system enhancements, and provides assistance for system users and other technical support staff on system functionality and support requirements.
Contacts are internal and external. May act as a key technical point of contact for assigned activities. Contributes to the preparation of management/technical reports or contractual documents and may be called upon to communicate the overall results of a project or work activity to FAA management, the aviation and aerospace industries, and other external parties.
Established policies/procedures provide guidance for most assignments but allow considerable discretion to select the most appropriate approach or to recommend new approaches. Assignments typically require solutions that are to be derived by interpreting and extrapolating from situations that were faced in the past. Provides recommendations to improve work processes. Resolves all but unique technical problems without the intervention of management or a more experienced engineer. Identifies and informs management of
problems that require their attention. Often develops and recommends techniques to address problem situations.
Work is reviewed periodically, typically at major milestones and at completion, for technical compliance and alignment with the requirements of the project or other work activity.

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-H, FG/GS 11-12 in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
Specialized Experience is: Experience providing operations and maintenance support of National Airspace System (NAS) systems involving the modification and modernization of hardware/firmware/software systems and experience analyzing operational readiness or supportability of new NAS systems for deployment.
Applicants may also qualify for this series and grade with education:
Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics
OR
Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
