First Response Rail Service is currently looking to fill an open position for a Rail Car General Labor, in Emporia, Virginia.

As a general labor employee, your role will involve providing essential support in various tasks related to metal fabrication, material handling, and painting / decaling processes. You will work under the supervision of experienced personnel, contributing to the smooth operation of the repair of rail cars. This position requires physical stamina, attention to detail, the ability to work effectively as part of a team and requires the employee to work outside in the different seasonal elements.

• Basic mechanical knowledge is required.
• Basic understanding of tools and equipment used in metalworking and painting, including hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, and paint application techniques.
• Some welding and torching experience is preferred.
• Prepare surfaces for painting by cleaning, grinding or priming, using appropriate tools and techniques.
• Apply paint or protective coatings to metal surfaces, employing appropriate methods such as spraying, brushing, or rolling.
• Support metal fabrication processes, including cutting, bending, and grinding, by providing necessary tools, equipment, or materials to the technicians.
• Assist in the assembly and installation of components on railcars, following provided instructions and specifications.
• Physical stamina and the ability to perform tasks that involve lifting, bending, standing, and working in various weather conditions.
• Attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions accurately.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues and supervisors.
• Willingness to learn, adapt to changing work requirements, and take on new responsibilities.
• Previous experience in a similar role or familiarity with metalworking and mechanical knowledge is advantageous.
