First Round Capital is Hiring a Software Engineer Near San Francisco, CA

About First RoundFirst Round is an early-stage venture capital firm on a mission to build and serve the world's strongest community of entrepreneurs.
We help startups like Notion, Uber, Roblox, Square, and hundreds more tackle company building firsts. We connect entrepreneurs with the knowledge, people, and companies they need for maximum impact.
Whether it’s pre-seed, seed or Series A, we’re building the world’s best product for founders who are just getting started.
About The RoleWhy would a talented engineer want to join a VC firm?Just this: If you’re passionate about startups and technology, there’s no better place to learn and make a difference than at First Round.
First Round is reinventing venture capital and creating the world's strongest community of entrepreneurs. To make it all happen, we design and build our own unique products that our core and extended community of founders, CEOs, and their teams use every day, as well as products that will superpower our internal teams processes.
That’s where you come in.
When you join our team, you’ll plug into an epic community of entrepreneurs. You’ll have a front row seat to company creation from day one, with unparalleled access to technology founders. Your software will help this next generation of founders and teams go farther, faster.
First Round engineers have gone on to join fast growing startups in our community and have founded their own startups. And there’s this: We’re a small, lean team, so you’ll drive product strategy and implement your vision as you best see fit.
Maybe you’re an experienced full-stack engineer looking to take end-to-end ownership of new projects. Maybe you’re a front-end engineer looking to take on more product and design responsibility. Maybe you’re a back-end engineer looking to work on interesting data problems and grow in your front-end abilities. If this sounds like you, then we'd love to chat!
As a Software Engineer you will:
  • Own product development end-to-end — from brainstorming ideas and gathering requirements to launching new code to production
  • Improve our existing products, which support both the entrepreneurs we invest in and our internal teams
  • Work on a variety of apps in a variety of languages (Django, Python, React, Ruby on Rails, Vue, ) and help with dev ops on AWS/Heroku
  • Build projects like these recent ones:
    • First Round Yellowpages - Find the most relevant contacts that can help our internal team for various functions (talent, GTM, etc). Blend new AI-based with traditional query based searches to surface the best set of contacts.
    • Data Provider API Integrations - Work with different data providers to tap into their API to blend the data with our Salesforce data to create and enrich contacts, companies and investment details.
    • Customer Introduction Workflows - How do we find who at First Round has the warmest connection to a potential customer for our Founders and how do we make it as simple as possible for folks to make the connections.
You could be a great Software Engineer at First Round if:
  • You've built and deployed numerous applications in a professional setting
  • You have experience writing maintainable, well-tested code while moving fast
  • You love working collaboratively and cross-functionally to bring new ideas to life
  • You are great at communicating with non-technical stakeholders to understand product requirements
  • You’re an aspiring entrepreneur and want an unparalleled place to learn about and connect with startups at the earliest stages
Our Values:
  • Try harder for founders. They’re our customers — LPs are our shareholders. Going above and beyond for our founders is what we do. We strive to be a founder's most valuable investor. That’s why we don't pull term sheets, and we're always in for their second round. We respond to their emails in hours, not days. We build candidate pipelines, unprompted. We arrange meal deliveries when they become a new parent. Simply put, we go above and beyond to earn that right to be their first call every time there’s a bump in the road.
  • Give your unvarnished opinions and unwavering support. We strive to be kind, not nice. One of the most (counterintuitively) compassionate things you can do is to offer your unvarnished opinion — along with your unwavering support. That willingness to risk a fleeting moment of discomfort in exchange for someone else’s growth is long-term kindness.
  • Treat the little things like big things. Everything can always be made better. We’re all about the carefully crafted, the nitty-gritty, and the bespoke. Whether it’s hand cutting each nameplate, or debating the optimal shape of the dinner table, no detail is too small to sweat.
  • Make speed a habit. Whatever you’re building, remember that now is better than two weeks from now. We’re fans of starting small and iterating quickly. No matter what we’re launching, you’ll likely hear this question in a meeting: “How soon can we get something out there?”
  • Invent and wander. Never stop experimenting. The best ideas are born out of experimentation. Our flagship programs have always come from our penchant for going out on a limb and approaching problems with a different perspective.
  • Build wider doorways and longer tables. We're in the business of backing people and betting on their ideas — no matter where they come from. While talent is evenly distributed, opportunity is not. We need to break down barriers in our investment process, and make sure our work doesn’t stop after writing a check. Everything from the composition of our team to the inclusiveness of our community impacts how we can support founders.
First Round is dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workspace. We encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply because we believe that our diverse team helps us make better, more empathetic decisions.
This role is remote-eligible, or can take advantage of our office locations if based in San Francisco, New York, or Philadelphia.Compensation Range: $140K - $180K
