FIU-After-School All-Stars College Impact Program is Hiring a 2024 High School Summer Fashion Instructor, FIU ASAS College Impact Near North Miami, FL

FIU-After-School All-Stars is currently seeking passionate and talented instructors to serve high school students in its COLLEGE IMPACT SUMMER PROGRAM (June 10-July 31, 2024). We are looking for an experienced fashion enthusiast and crafts teacher for our summer camp programs. Do you love building and making things?

About FIU After-School All-Stars

MISSION: Founded in 1992, After-School All-Stars (ASAS), provides free, daily after school and summer programs to over 90,000 youth in over 450 school sites in 19 chapters across the U.S. FIU After-School All-Stars, within FIU’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education, seeks to remedy the educational inequalities that exist for under-represented, first generation, low-income and minority students in South Florida. The College Impact Program serves the FIU-ASAS mission by providing academic enrichment, social-emotional learning, college prep and career exploration.

Job Description

The Fashion Design summer track focuses on the major aspects of the fashion industry and prepares students for careers and/or postsecondary education in this rapidly growing field. Students pursuing this track have interest in hands-on experiences that focus on principles of design, history of fashion, textiles, product knowledge, apparel merchandising, and garment production.

The Fashion instructor teaches and facilitates Fashion education to 9th-12th graders. Students will learn drawing, sketch, portfolio, design, cut, and clothes/accessories assembly among other fashion-centric modalities and concepts.

Instructors are responsible for developing/implementing engaging, 6-week lesson plans, managing classrooms, ensuring safety of students, and facilitating daily implementation of session. Teaching responsibilities require presence at the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus during program hours, Monday through Friday from 9:00am-3:30pm (specific hours for instruction will vary).

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Identify the educational needs of students

· Facilitate design and creation projects and/or classes

· Give exact instructions on how the projects should be assembled

  • Create and implement an age-appropriate 6-week-long curriculum that progressively builds on elements and principles of fashion design and creation
  • Set up and prepare materials for each class, ensuring all necessary supplies and equipment are readily available for students
  • Complete daily attendance accurately
  • Maintain a safe and organized classroom environment, enforcing safety rules and procedures related to the use of sewing machines
  • Progressive development of student skills leading to a final project
  • Promote positive character development in students
  • Provide a fun, encouraging, and disciplined atmosphere
  • Participate in facilitated reviews and student progress monitoring meetings for attendance, academic and social-emotional learning.
  • Travel with students for planned field trips and special events.
  • Maintain professional and positive relationships with College Impact staff, camp counselors, site management, partners, students, and parents and volunteers.

The instructor will also prepare students to:

· Understand the principles and techniques used in fashion design and product creation

· Apply the elements and principles of design in various aspects of the fashion industry

· Understand how the history of social, cultural, and technological changes influence fashion

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate’s required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • One-plus years experience working with high school students

· The ideal candidate should possess excellent communication skills and a passion for teaching youth fashion skills and concepts.
