Florence County Government is Hiring a Codes Enforcement/Residential Building Code Officer Near Florence, SC

The Codes Enforcement Officer enforces various ordinances of Florence County that pertain to public safety, land use, and development. 

Essential Functions:
  • Maintains applicable records, conducts investigations, and thoroughly manages the respective documentation related to such violations of the various ordinances.
  • Performs field site visits to investigate alleged violations.
  • Meets with owners and owner’s representatives, in the field or office to discuss code violations and possible remedies. 
  • Issues summons to appear in magistrate’s court for violations of the Florence County Code of Ordinances. 
  • Represents Florence County in magistrate’s court. 
  • Issues Stop Work Orders on behalf of various departments of the County.
  • Answers inquiries from the general public regarding Zoning/Nuisance/Sign Ordinance, Building Codes, and other County laws and ordinances.
  • Coordinates with the Department Director and County Attorney by providing research assistance, transmission of documents, requesting legal opinions, etc.
  • Coordinates records management regarding legal issues, litigation, original contracts, original ordinances, and appeals.
  • Keeps Department Director advised of court procedures and updates on active court cases.
  • Researches legislative proposals, bills, and current State issues.
  • Conducts on-site inspections of residential building construction projects to ensure conformance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Maintains accurate records of inspections and conferences with contractors, architects, engineers, and owners regarding the inspection results and follows up appropriately.
  • Discusses code requirements with contractors, owners, and the general public; responds to complaints in a timely manner. 
  • Communicates with various groups and individuals.
Non-Essential Functions:
  • Prepares special reports and surveys of specific premises.
  • Performs all other related duties as required.
Qualifications: Education and Work Experience
  • Requires an Associate’s degree in construction, engineering, architecture, or a related field, with five years of experience in construction, and/or inspections, and/or codes enforcement, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A law enforcement background is desirable.
  • Must possess an International Code Council’s (ICC) Residential Building Inspector certification and Property Maintenance Inspector Certification within 24 months of the hire date.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license. 
  • Pay will be consistent with the number of ICC Residential Inspector certifications earned.

  • Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, and lift 50lb. objects regularly.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee must have the ability to travel up to 75%.
