Job Summary

The Environmental Health & Safety Coordinator II coordinates environmental health and safety programs and formulates policies and procedures to effectively administer such programs.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

* Responsible for interpreting environmental health and safety administrative regulations and policies and for recommending new and improved programs to effectively manage environmental health and safety administration.

* Collaborates with university administrators and inter institutional groups in resolving complex environmental health and safety problems and in disseminating information in regard to university regulations, policies, and contracts.

* Oversees Hazardous and biological waste management programs from collection to manifest verification. Uses and promotes Waste Minimization techniques.

* Manages solvent recycling program, including system chemical processes, maintaining communications with users for waste pick-ups and deliveries, and container management.

* Oversees the University's chemical inventory management program. Responsible for training department users to prepare inspection and compliance reports using the chemical inventory tracking system.

* Responsible for submitting annual Tier II Report.

* Monitors chemical hazard information input and reconciles compliance issues.

* Certifies chemical fume hoods and performs Fit testing in accordance with OSHA Respiratory Protection standard.

* Coordinates the review of proposed research projects.

* May serve as liaison with appropriate State and Federal regulating agencies.

* Performs complex laboratory audits and conducts environmental site inspections to ensure compliance with MS4 Phase II Stormwater Permit.

* Provides in-service training and facilitates meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of identifying issues, developing recommendations, and supporting staff.

* Serves as a resource to staff, campus community, and general public.

* Maintains files, databases, and completes required regulatory reports.

* Identifies locations of select agents, carcinogens, toxic gases, and flammable substances on campus.

* Leads accident/injury investigations and makes recommendations in accordance with local, state and federal requirements.

Other Duties:

* May assist with maintenance of the department's website.

* Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

* This position requires either eight years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.

* Relevant full-time experience.

* Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook).

* Experience with hazardous waste management techniques.

* Completion of the 24 or 40 hour HAZWOPER training or ability to obtain within three months of employment.

* Valid Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Master's Degree from an accredited institution in Environmental Health and Safety or closely related field.

* Experience working in a laboratory environment.

* Experience in environmental health and safety program development, preferably in an academic environment.

* Proficient with web html, and web graphics.

* Completion of recognized Environmental Health and Safety certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

* Knowledge of occupational safety principles in the use of personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and chemical labeling.

* Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, statutes, regulations, codes, and standards related to specialized environmental health and safety functions.

* Knowledge of laboratory operations, procedures and techniques.

* Knowledge of chemical waste management techniques and hazardous waste handling and storage procedures.

* Knowledge of Waste Minimization techniques.

* Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

* Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records, files, and reports.

* Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.

* Ability to respond quickly to environmental health and safety emergencies.

* Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols.

* Ability to diffuse and respond professionally to stressful situations and difficult people.

* Ability to develop and deliver training presentations and programs.
