Department: Nursing - Obstetrics (Birth Center)

Hours: Part-time (0.6-0.75 FTE, 48-60 hours per biweekly pay period including every third weekend) – Night Shift: 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. with 30-minute meal break

Description:

Floyd County Medical Center is seeking experienced obstetrical nurses to join our team!

Position Overview: The Obstetrical (OB) Registered Nurse (RN) will provide and assist in the safe and effective perinatal and infant nursing care. Exhibit knowledge and competency in the nursing care of ante-partum, intra-partum, post-partum, and nursery settings. Provide nursing care and treatment to OB patients and infants based on the nursing process using assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Accept responsibility for the care, treatment, and delivery of the obstetrical patient. Responsible to practice and maintain OB policies, procedures, and standards. Provide OB and newborn health education to patients. Interact with nursing staff, physicians, and other departments to ensure that the OB patient and infant’s needs are met. Use critical thinking skills in making decisions regarding OB patient and infant care.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine skills or treatments in a manner that provides for patient comfort and protects the patient’s dignity, privacy, and confidentiality.
  • Perform tasks and technical skills in accordance with the OB Unit’s policies and procedures for OB patients and Newborns.
  • Provide competent patient care to the above-indicated patient population.
  • Prepare patients for tests and procedures within the RN’s scope of practice.
  • Float to various units as determined by the House Supervisor and/or Nursing Services administrative staff when the OB Unit is closed.
  • Assess patients and identify common and obvious physical and psychosocial needs. Develop ability to identify common or unusual, complex physical and psychosocial needs.
  • Develop an individualized Plan of Care within 24 hours of admission. Review and update the Plan of Care every 24 hours based on changes in the patient’s condition. Utilize the nursing process to meet the physical, psychological, social, and rehabilitative needs of the patient.
  • Report pertinent observations and response to nursing interventions to the appropriate person (i.e., Physician, House Supervisor) and record those observations accurately and concisely.
  • Actively participate in individualized patient teaching activities with the patient and/or their significant other.
  • Assign nursing care to staff members in accordance with the patient’s needs and the staff member’s capabilities and qualifications, and assign other duties as needed.
  • Direct, coordinate, and evaluate nursing care provided to patients.
  • Precisely, accurately, completely, and legibly document all pertinent data in the patient’s chart.
  • Administer medications as prescribed.
  • Perform treatments for patients as prescribed.
  • Collaborate with physician/providers regarding patient care, patient needs, and family needs.
  • Administer direct patient care.
  • Assist staff team members in giving care to patients.
  • Begin the patient/family Discharge Plan on admission and discharge planning to finalize post hospital care.
  • Maintain accountability for nursing care by identifying and reporting patient problems to the appropriate multi-disciplinary team member (i.e., Physician, Case Management/ Utilization Review Nurse, House Supervisor, etc.).
  • Institute or assist with emergency measures for adverse developments in the patient’s condition.
  • Coordinate and prioritize care of the patient requiring multi-disciplinary services (i.e., Physical Therapy, Radiology, etc.).
  • Initiate and maintain intravenous (IV) therapy skillfully and correctly.
  • Initiate and maintain blood transfusions and other blood products skillfully and correctly, including accurate and complete documentation in the patient’s record.
  • Perform various unit duties including, but not limited to checking equipment, assuring proper supplies are in unit, and preparing unit for patient care.
  • Frequently perform detailed tasks, very frequently subjected to interruptions and changing work priorities.
  • Support and abide by all medical center, departmental, and OB unit policies and procedures.
  • Act in a professional manner, reflecting the mission, vision, and values of the medical center.
  • Perform other responsibilities within scope of practice as requested/directed by the Birth Center Director, House Supervisor, or Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and prompt good working relationships in a collegial manner.
  • Support the application of Quality Improvement (QI) principles and participate in QI activities.
  • Participate in activities that promote better patient care, nursing development, and professional growth

Minimum Education/Licensure/Certification Required:

  • Minimum of Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current licensure as an RN in the State of Iowa
  • Basic Life Support (BLS). BLS is not required for staff with Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications.
  • Basic Fetal Monitoring Course
  • Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP)
  • Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Mandatory Reporter of Dependent Adult/Child Abuse or completion within six months of hire.
  • Minimum of two years obstetrical experience required.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Must be able to read, write, comprehend, and verbally communicate in English fluently.

  • Ability to prioritize assignments and manage time efficiently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff, Health Care Providers, and other departments.
