Department: Sterile Processing / Central Services

Hours: Fulltime (1.0 FTE, 80 hours per biweekly pay period) – M-F 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with 30- minute meal period

Description:

Position Overview:

The Sterile Processing Technician performs technical duties involving all aspects of sterile processing including: decontamination, preparation, packaging, sterilization, sterile storage, distribution of sterile medical devices, as well as, tracking inventory, stocking, and distribution of medical supplies. The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the Operating Room (OR) trays being properly assembled and assures that all the instruments necessary to do a procedure are ready for use. The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible under the direction of the Surgical Services Director for instrument inventory, vendor trays, ordering, and repair of instruments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs the day-to-day cleaning of instruments and equipment that needs to be cleaned, wrapped, sterilized and/or high level disinfected.
  • Disassembles instruments and equipment for manual cleaning, use of the automatic washer, and use of Automated Endoscope Reprocessor (AER).
  • Tests and cleans the sterilizers, washers, and records outcomes.
  • Knows and uses chemical and biological indicators, maintains records as applicable.
  • Uses functional workflow patterns to create and maintain physical separation between decontamination and sterilization areas

  • Wears appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required such as gowns, gloves, and face masks.
  • Follows manufacturer’s Instructions For Use (IFUs).
  • Transports contaminated and clean items per policy/procedure.
  • Implements corrective measures when sterile processing deviates from norm.
  • Uses steam, hydrogen peroxide, immediate use sterilization, and is able to read and interpret results cycle results.
  • Assists with ordering and restocking of OR and Same Day Surgery areas.
  • Assist with inventory pull for scheduled or add-on surgical cases.
  • Maintains knowledge of infection control policy/procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year experience in a hospital-related field that would provide a background in medical environment or sterile technique as it applies to medical supplies and equipment.
  • Proficient knowledge of sterilization processes.
  • Ability to successfully complete required certification program.

Licensure/Certification Required:

Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA, formerly IAHCSMM) Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) preferred upon hire or must be credentialed within 24-months of hire. Other related certifications may be considered.
