The Food Bank of the Southern Tier (FBST) is seeking a passionate JSY (Just Say Yes) Nutrition Educator to join our team!

In this remote (in our 6-county service area) role, you'll be a champion for healthy food access by:

  • Developing and Delivering Impactful Workshops: Design and lead engaging JSY nutrition education workshops tailored to diverse audiences (5-20 participants) at food pantries and meal sites.
  • Becoming a Food Hero: Plan, prepare, and showcase healthy food options for workshops, ensuring proper handling and portion sizes.
  • Building Bridges & Breaking Stigma: Connect with clients from various backgrounds who may have limited resources and potential past traumas. Empathy and cultural sensitivity are key.
  • Serving as a Facilitator: Guide interactive discussions at workshops that integrate JSY messages with participant needs using strong active listening skills.

Primary Functions:

The JSY Nutrition Educator is part of the Food Bank's team supporting healthy food access and education within the emergency food network, utilizing JSY SNAP-ed principles. This position oversees all Food Bank's JSY nutrition education workshops at various community locations, such as food pantries and meal sites. Responsibilities will encompass the entire workshop lifecycle, from scheduling, design and marketing, and preparation of food to hands-on facilitation for groups of five to twenty participants using the JSY program curriculum. This position interacts extensively with households with diverse perspectives on food and health and may face limited financial resources, high levels of trauma, and stigma associated with seeking emergency food assistance. Important skills for this position include a passion for preparing, cooking, and discussing healthy food, experience in food preparation for groups, active listening, and the ability to guide group discussions that integrate key JSY messages and topics relevant to workshop participants. The position works remotely, traveling throughout the Food Bank's six-county service area, with 60% of the time spent at community locations and 40% working from a home office. Food preparation for workshops generally occurs at the workforce member's home or the workshop location.

Specific Duties:

  • Regularly communicates with the JSY Health & Nutrition Coordinator to ensure seamless JSY SNAP-ed support to food pantries and other partner agencies/community organizations.
  • Actively recruits and schedules 12 monthly engaging JSY nutrition education workshops at partner agencies and other community locations.
  • Collaborates with the Programs & Partnerships Coordinators to identify and secure workshop locations across the Food Bank's service area.
  • Provides nutrition resources, including recipes and JSY recipe cards to partner agencies and FBST program sites.
  • Creates informative JSY messages tailored for email, newsletters, and social media to connect with our community.
  • Partners with the Development & Community Engagement Department to use social media to promote JSY workshops, schedules, and important health and nutrition messages.
  • Collaborates with the Health & Nutrition team to provide technical assistance on the Food Bank's nutrition policy and food acquisition practices.
  • Provide prompt and informative responses to agency and client inquiries about recipes and other food-related information.

Workshop Design & Management

  • Develops, plans, and shops for food and materials and conducts engaging and informative in-person and virtual nutrition education workshopstailored to JSY Program participants' needs and JSY Program goals.
  • Aligns JSY workshops with other health and nutrition education initiatives, like Cornell Cooperative Extension's SNAP-ed, to maximize community impact.
  • Procures all necessary supplies to support educational efforts and JSY workshops
  • Administers participant surveys at the conclusion of workshops.
  • Enters and maintains accurate program data to organize information for timely reporting to JSY and the Food Bank.

Logistics & Support

  • Ensures accurate inventory of JSY equipment and materials used for nutrition education workshops.
  • Assists with organizing the Food Bank for JSY program reviews as needed.
  • Participates in Food Bank's food acquisition team meetings.
  • Actively participates in Food Bank's JSY team meetings.
  • With JSY Contract Manager approval, assists in revising existing curriculum, creates new materials, and develops recipes aligned with NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) requirements.

General

  • Participates in other SNAP-Ed related tasks assigned by the NYSDOH Contract Manager or supervisor.
  • Attends JSY state-wide contractor meetings.
  • Assist the Director of Health & Nutrition in preparing and developing the JSY program plans, evaluations, budgets, and schedules.
  • Provides support and assumes some of the JSY Community Health & Nutrition Coordinator's responsibilities when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Thursday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, and Friday, 8:00 am – 1:00 pm

Note: The schedule will vary to accommodate workshops and partner agency hours of operation.

WORK TYPE: Remote (in our six-county service area)

WORKSITE: Workforce member's home office

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nutrition or Public Health (minimum of 15 credits in nutrition required).
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in community nutrition or a public health setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including spreadsheets and slide presentations, with the ability to use social media and the capacity to create eye-catching outreach materials.
  • Ability to travel throughout a six-county service area and accommodate possible overnight travel as needed.
  • Certification in Serv Safe is required and must be obtained within 180 days post-hiring.
  • Internet connectivity is the responsibility of the workforce member when working off-site. Reliable internet connection with a minimum bandwidth of 50Mbps (7.5M/Bs) download & 8Mbps (1.25 M/Bs) upload at all times to support software applications adequately.
