POSITION SUMMARY:

The job of Assistant Principal High School is done for the purpose of supporting the High School Principal, performing school site activities as may be delegated by the principal and representing the school within the district and community. The Assistant Principal provides a wide variety of services to assist the principal in the administration of a school, including: monitoring of the instructional and extra-curricular programs, supervision and evaluation of the licensed and classified staff, maintaining student discipline, scheduling classes, preparation of reports, records and other required paperwork. The Assistant Principal may be required to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal. When more than one Assistant Principal is assigned to the building, the specific accountabilities may vary according to the assignment. This position reports directly to the High School Principal.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists the principal in the monitoring of the instructional and extra-curricular programs
  • Attends and supervises school sponsored activities
  • Assists the principal in the improvement of the instructional program
  • Assists the principal in the supervision and evaluation of the performance of the licensed and classified staff
  • Assists and evaluates implementation and use of technology in classroom instruction and throughout the building
  • Develops class schedules and schedules staff and students to meet the needs of the students
  • Assists the principal in maintaining effective student discipline and in promoting a positive teaching-learning environment within the school
  • Works with parents and others in the community to promote a positive working relationship between the school and the community
  • Prepares reports, maintains school records and handles other administrative matters as required
  • Assumes principal duties in the absence of the principal
  • Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Develops strong relationships with students and staff
  • Assists with grant management; Measure 98 and CTE
  • Assumes responsibility for student discipline, attendance and graduation

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains consistent and predictable attendance to meet the requirements of the position
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Required

A minimum of a Master’s degree in an appropriate field of education.

Secondary teaching and administrative/dean experience

Skills

Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing with staff, parents and the public in English. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred, but not required. Ability to work individually and in partnerships with a minimum of direction. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Ability to demonstrate interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Ability to deal with students and parents in often difficult circumstances. Maintain high visibility at school and in the community and hold high expectations for students and staff. Work well with others from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations. Strong organizational skills; ability to prioritize. Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, or district patrons.

Knowledge

Strong knowledge of curriculum and instruction. Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework and education code. Knowledge of Oregon laws and school reform. Knowledge of Career and Technical Education and dual credit options for high school students preferred. Knowledge of student academic and behavioral supports and interventions preferred. Knowledge of federal and state grants, i.e., Perkins and other state grants.

Abilities

Demonstrates command of oral and written English language. Positive team approach to leadership and management. Ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers. Ability to motivate, direct and support staff. Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English, Spanish, or other languages related to the job. Ability to work harmoniously with others.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required

An administrative license from Teacher Standards and Practices Commission in the State of Oregon is required.

A current teaching license from Teacher Standards and Practices Commission in the State of Oregon is preferred.
