Fort Wayne Allen County Airport Authority is Hiring a Public Safety Officer Near FORT WAYNE, IN

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides excellent customer service to tenants and other customers.
  • Operates all Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) equipment.
  • Extinguishes both aircraft and structural fires.
  • Rescue of passengers.
  • Controls traffic and crowds.
  • Familiar with and enforces Airport Authority Ordinances.
  • Renders first aid to the injured.
  • Maintains departmental equipment.
  • Detects safety hazards.
  • Performs airfield inspections and other airport operation duties.
  • Provide surveillance of terminal, other buildings, and provides general security of the entire airport.
  • Enforces Federal, State and local laws as a sworn Law Enforcement Officer under the Indiana Code.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of fire prevention and firefighting techniques, particularly as applied to ARFF. 
  • Knowledge of rules and laws regulating firefighting and lifesaving procedures;
  • Knowledge of the equipment, materials and vehicles needed for firefighting and lifesaving at an airport;
  • Knowledge of structural firefighting, particularly aircraft hangars and other airport structures;
  • Ability to perform trauma first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency cardiac care;
  • Ability to make instant decisions under emergency conditions effecting lives, safety and property of others.
  • Ability to operate on airfield and perform field checks and other general airport operation duties.
  • Ability to supervise other officers and to direct and coordinate all public safety officers in their duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain morale among all officers.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to pass a physical exam as given by a licensed medical doctor.
  • Ability to maintain physical conditioning to successfully perform ARFF duties and emergency extraction.

Experience and Education Requirements

High school equivalent education with one to three years of work experience in aviation security, police and crash rescue techniques.

Position requires basic computer operations experience, including strong working knowledge of email, word processing and spreadsheet applications (Microsoft products desirable).

Special Requirements

  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid state driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain a FWACAA-issued AOA Driving Privileges
  • Pass a pre-hire drug screen and random alcohol and drug testing.
  • Pass federal fingerprint based criminal history background check.
  • Available for recall during non duty hours for emergencies, snow removal or other required duties.
  • Must be an Indiana Certified Firefighter I / II.
  • Must be a certified law enforcement officer (graduate of Indiana Law Enforcement Academy recognized by State law) or be able to obtain the certifications within one year.
  • Must be at a minimum, a certified medical first responder.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within one year NIMS 100,200,700,800.
  • Must have or be able to obtain Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) School certification.

Physical Activities

Climbing

Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.

Stooping/

Bending

Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles

Hand-arm Manipulation/Reaching

Manual control or manipulation of objects through hand and/or arm movements, which may or may not require continuous visual control

Particularly for sustained periods of time

Walking

Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances. 

Pushing

Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

Pulling

Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

Lifting

Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.

Repetitive Motions

Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Finger Manipulation

Making careful finger movements in various types of activities; picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling; usually hand and arm are not involved to any great extent.

Foot Coordination

The coordination of hand and/or foot movements where the movement must be coordinated with what is seen.

Grasping

Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

Feeling
