Job DescriptionFrancis Howell School District
The job of Software Support Technician is done for the purpose/s of maintaining computer and network equipment and software for transportation operations in a safe and functional operating condition; providing advanced technical support; resolving immediate operational and safety concerns; and providing in-service training and documentation on applications and hardware; assisting System Administrator with installing, administering, and optimizing various district systems; with direction from IT Managers, will conduct general troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment of the Wide Area Network (WAN).
This job reports to Systems Administrator
Essential Functions
  • Assesses malfunctions of computer hardware and software applications for the purpose of determining appropriate actions to maintain computer and network operations.
  • Assists in warehousing computer parts, supplies, and materials for the purpose of establishing an inventory of items commonly required to repair computer hardware.
  • Attends meetings as assigned (e.g. unit meetings, workshops, in-services, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and gathering information required to perform functions of the job.
  • Installs a wide variety of hardware and software for district network infrastructure (e.g. computer hardware, peripherals, application software, {OS systems, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining safe and effective district and site operations.
  • Maintains a variety of manual and electronic files and/or records (e.g. service request database/work order status, inventory spreadsheet, computer images, etc.) for the purpose of for the purpose of documenting activities, providing reference and audit trails.
  • Manages and seeks continuous improvements and efficiencies in task sequences, application deployments, updates, and reports with SCCM for the purpose of maintaining and deploying systems for users in the district.
  • Prepares a variety of information (e.g. work order reports, inventory control, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and conveying information.
  • Procures equipment, supplies, and materials necessary to the completion of work orders (e.g. needed hardware, software, and technology-related supplies, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items and completing jobs efficiently.
  • Provide maintenance and installation of the Transportation department's approved hardware and software for the purpose of providing operational computer technology and instructional training to minimize disruption of services and/or inconvenience.
  • Provides technical support to Transportation Department personnel in the operation of electronic equipment, computers, and software at the operator level for the purpose of ensuring their ability to use new and existing processes.
  • Repairs a wide variety of systems (e.g. computers, peripherals, software, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining computer and peripheral equipment in a safe and functional operating condition.
  • Researches work-related topics (e.g. best practices in troubleshooting and repair, software updates, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring effective use and maintenance of technology in the District.
  • Responds to inquiries from other technicians to make administrative changes to accounts, systems, servers, etc. for the purpose of providing technical assistance, advice, and support.
  • Responds to inquiries from a wide variety of stakeholders (e.g. teachers, administrators, staff, students, etc.) for the purpose of providing information, making recommendations, and resolving issues.
  • Troubleshoots hardware and software for district network infrastructure (e.g. preliminary LAN, installing patch cables, upgrades, cleaning, and maintenance, email, Administration system, connectivity, and network operations systems, etc.) for the purpose of providing immediate assistance to users for problem resolution.
  • Upgrades computers, peripherals, and software applications for the purpose of meeting the computer processing needs of the users while remaining current in software and hardware used in the District.
  • Works as a backup to the systems administrator and assumes their responsibilities when absent or occupied for the purpose of providing information and making recommendations.
Other Functions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and utilizing pertinent software applications.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of electronics; photoelectric processes; current generation operating systems; a variety of computer systems; office and general educational software; and advanced troubleshooting methodologies.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a wide variety of types
of job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: displaying mechanical aptitude; adapting to changing work priorities; establishing effective working relationships; communicating with diverse groups; being attentive to detail; working under time constraints; filtering feedback; and implementation.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization's services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, 30% standing. The job is
performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness and in some varying atmospheric conditions.
Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
Education: Targeted, job related education with study in job-related area.
Equivalency: Prefer technical degree from 2-year accredited institution, or IT technical certification and experience.
