Job Summary

The General Foreman coordinates operations and oversee foremen and employees at the production sites. As the senior manager for the production workforce, the General Foreman will be the key person in charge of overseeing the completion of various simultaneous project with a keen awareness of material expenses, staffing requirements, policies and procedures, and employee safety.

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with vessel Port Engineers, Yard Superintendent, Yard Foremen, and Government Contracting Officers to manage repair projects.
  • Works with Coast Guard and American Bureau of Shipping to ensure repair work is completed to ABS/CG standards.
  • Schedules, attends, and documents surveys with customers and regulatory bodies.
  • Develops and provides reports to vessel owners and ABS/CG. Includes NDT (UT) reports, survey reports, etc.
  • Works with Yard personnel and customers to develop, maintain and communicate schedules for repair/maintenance projects.
  • Meet with existing clients to perform an initial assessment, discuss goals, and strategize methods for improvement, provide updates on project specific information.
  • Solve problems through helpful recommendations and practical suggestions.
  • Collect data on work projects performed through meetings, workplace shadowing and researching documents.
  • Prepares reports and documentation as is required by management.
  • Coordinates work with subcontractors hired by the Yard on vessel projects.
  • Works with Yard Superintendent to quote repair/maintenance work.
  • Works with Yard Superintendent to provide written technical responses to solicitation (incl. government solicitations)
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, participating in professional societies.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Acts as liaison between project staff, subcontractors, and internal company personnel.
  • Co-Manages development of project execution strategy including planning, scheduling, staffing needs, vendor and subcontractor support requirement, contractual requirements.
  • Ensures compliance with overall Health, Safety, and Environmental standards in cooperation with the Safety Department. Ensuring that Yard personnel, subcontractors, and ship's crew are following Yard safety requirements.
  • Confers with production staff to outline work plan and assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority; provides or facilitates technical advice and problem resolution support.
  • Monitors, leads, and troubleshoots the working process.
  • Coaches, mentors, motivates, and directs production team members and contractors, and influences them to take positive action and accountability for their work to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget.
  • Ensures company performance against contractual commitments with customer and ensures customer satisfaction with projects.
  • In cooperate effort with the team foreman, coordinate, and plan day to day production activities as well as forecasting.
  • Manages activities and coordination between support (engineering, purchasing, warehouse, and HR) and production functions.
  • Responsible for ensuring information and materials are available for planned work.
  • Manages all aspects of production man hours, tracking for production analysis, and scheduling.
  • Coordinates with HR, foreman and yard superintendent for maintaining an adequate labor force to meet production schedule.
  • Direct supervisor for all production personnel performing work within the specific division.
  • In conjunction with HR and management, maintains shop floor discipline of division personnel.
  • Implementation and enforcement of company processes and policies.
  • Maintains facility equipment and tools in safe and operable condition.
  • Responsible for shop cleanliness within their areas.
  • Supports production work by hands-on duties as required.

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of construction best practices, equipment maintenance, and use, and OSHA guidelines
  • Understanding of use and maintenance of diverse boat systems
  • Knowledge in either electrical, hydraulic and engine systems or in aluminum welding fabrication
  • Proficient with presenting technical information, general consulting skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Knowledge of marine systems and ship repair.
  • Requires a positive attitude.
  • Position requires availability 24/7, as our customers work around the clock and repair jobs are reported at any time/day.
  • Experience reading and interpreting vessel blueprints.
  • Available to work in all weather conditions (For example, could be on a ballast tank survey or deck survey in the middle of winter).
  • Capable of entering confined spaces and climbing ladders for vessel surveys.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED or similar required.
  • Certification in a skilled trade (electrician, carpenter) preferred. Experience with USCG License or Marine Engineering degree beneficial.
  • 4 years' experience in ship repair/construction required. Management experience required.
  • Must be eligible for a TWIC Card.
  • Must have or be eligible for a driver license.

Physical requirements

Some periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Position requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, crawling, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, overhead work, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity. Must be able to work in tight, confined spaces, such as accessing manholes, and awkward positions for long periods of time. Must be able to conduct inside and outside work in all temperatures. Use of manufacturing equipment. Work in environment where harmful dusts, fogs, fumes, gases, etc. might be present and the use of a respirator may be required. Ability to work in inclement weather conditions/areas that at times are not environmentally controlled. Able to move/lift/pull/push 50 lbs.
