Position Summary:

The Child Care Teacher is responsible for performing all essential duties and responsibilities in the operation of a classroom of children ages two (2) to twelve (12). The Child Care Teacher must be able to work effectively with a wide range of constituents in a diverse community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following are the functions essential to performing this job:

1. Understand developmental stages and milestones from infancy through age twelve (12), major theories of child development, and how children learn.

2. Develop and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum/weekly lesson plans and daily activities that meet emotional, physical, intellectual, and social needs of the individual children in the group.

3. Understand and use methods of assessment and observation techniques to observe and evaluate children and to inform teaching.

4. Understand inclusionary practices based on national standards and best practices in early childhood education and school age programs.

5. Knows how to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), establish an inclusive child care environment, and meet the needs of all children in care.

6. Understand the impact of health, nutrition, family, and parenting styles on child growth and development.

7. Understand the influence of culture and community on child development and work effectively with a wide range of constituents in a diverse community.

8. Understand the responsibilities of identifying and reporting incidents of child abuse and neglect.

9. Supervise, train, and assist with evaluating assistant teachers, aides, work study, and practicum students.

10. Maintain a clean, warm, and safe environment (indoors and outdoors) that is orderly and contains a predicable routine.

11. Develop and nurture partnerships with families.

12. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with parent, co-workers, Assistant Director, and Director.

13. Ensure that each child and parent is treated with dignity and respect.

14. Use and ensure the use of appropriate and positive guidance techniques to help children develop internal control of their behaviors based on theory and best practices.

15. Conduct self in professional manner at all times respecting the confidentiality of all children and their families (whether at work or on personal time) and reflecting a positive image of the Center to the Community.

16. Complete continued education/professional development training as required by Maryland State Department of Education, Office of Child Care and as recommended by the College.

17. Maintain compliance with all Maryland State Department of Education, Office of Child Care regulations (COMAR 13A.14.02).

18. Help direct the evacuation of the building in an emergency and be able to respond immediately to any emergency.

19. Administer and document first aid and CPR as appropriate.

20. Comply with applicable Universal Precautions and Infection Control Guidelines and Procedures.

21. Participate in Center wide events, such as family night, parent teacher conferences, literacy night, back to school night, etc.

22. Use basic computer skills to manage classroom attendance, create lesson plans and newsletters, conduct parent-teacher conferences, communicate with parents, and to track student progress.

23. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications

1. 19 years of age or older

2. Meet and maintain all continuing education requirements for Child Care Teacher as required by Maryland State Department of Education, Office of Child Care regulations (COMAR 13A.14.02)

3. Ability, with or without accommodations, to stand for extended periods and lift children and objects up to fifty (50) pounds.

4. Ability to obtain and maintain CPR certification

Education Requirements:

1. Option 1

a. High school diploma or equivalent, or courses for credit from an accredited college or university

b. Six (6) semester hours or ninety (90) hours of child development and activities for preschool children, or hold the CDA

c. Nine clock hours of approved pre-service training in communicating with staff, parents, and the public

d. At least one of the following:

i. one (1) year of experience working under supervision primarily with preschoolers in a licensed child care center, nursery school, church-operated school, or similar setting, or as a registered family child care provider caring for preschoolers; or

ii. one (1) year of college, or

iii. combination of experience and college that together are equivalent to one (1) year

2. Option 2

a. Hold an associate or higher degree with approved courses in early childhood education

3. Option 3

a. Have been qualified before July 1, 2008, as a child care teacher in a preschool center and have been continuously employed since that time at the same or another preschool center.

4. Option 4

a. Have been approved as a teacher by the Department for early childhood in nursery school through third grade; or have been certified by the Department or by any other state for early childhood in nursery school through third grade

Desired Qualifications

1. Associate Degree or higher in early childhood education, child development, or related field

2. Minimum of one (1) year experience working with children in a structured early childhood program.

3. Combination of education and experience to equal five (5) years

4. Knowledge of child development, curriculum techniques, and positive guidance techniques

5. Ability to communicate effectively

Work Schedule

Shift scheduled during operating hours of 7:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday
