The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

Program DescriptionThe Occupational Health Services (OHS) program at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research at the National Cancer Institute at Frederick provides comprehensive professional occupational health nursing care to employees working in general offices, industrial shops, experimental research laboratories, and animal care environments. Work is performed within the clinic providing occupational, urgent, and emergency post exposure to biological, chemical, radiation exposures.
Key Roles/Responsibilities
  • Evaluate employees’ health status through comprehensive interviews, physical examinations, diagnostic testing, and through review of occupational health histories.
  • Counsel and advise employees on health matters, file worker compensation claims for job related injuries, and prepare and maintain employee medical and health status records.
  • Participate in on-call rotations with clinical staff promptly responding to emergencies and delivering round the clock occupational care following exposure incidents.
  • Render first aid and post exposure care for biological emergencies per written medical protocols.
  • Independently interpret data to determine needs and plan appropriate therapeutic measures.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other members of the occupational health team to make healthcare decisions.
  • Provide clear communication to the nursing team; provides concise documentation in reports and clearly explains care/discharge plans.
  • Follow up as directed.
  • Edit or compose documents and standard operating procedures.
  • Part-time 20 hours/week**
Basic QualificationsTo be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of Master’s degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
    • Must possess a degree/diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
  • No related work experience required with a Master's degree.
  • Must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Must have appropriate certification issued by the appropriate certifying body the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain a collaborative relationship with the Medical Director and various levels of medical staff.
  • Ability to assess acute and non-acute medical problems.
  • Ability to develop patient rapport and provide emotional support in helping patients cope with stress associated with illnesses.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Preferred QualificationsCandidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Experience in standard and investigational therapy in research setting.
  • Professional mastery of clinical nursing knowledge including patient assessment, medical care, and pharmacology.
