POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Coder processes patient data such as treatment records and related insurance information. The position includes day-to-day input, handling and entering of procedures, diagnostic codes for services rendered, and insurance information received. They also are tasked with coding a patient’s diagnosis, along with a request for payment from the patient’s insurance company. The candidate should possess high critical thinking skills, the ability to analyze and adhere to coding guidelines, and a refined judgment to handle them appropriately. The candidate must be able to work overtime hours as needed.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizes and prioritizes complex coding work to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and hospital targets.
  • Assigns the most appropriate diagnosis and procedures to reflect the utilization of resources during the patient encounter.
  • Recognizes documentation clarification opportunities to ensure it supports all codes and designation assignments. Initiates coding queries or tasks.
  • The transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes.
  • The ability to comprehend medical terminology and documentation in an office, or surgical setting.
  • Understanding the rules, regulations, sanctions and other statutory requirements, guidelines and instructions relating to governing bodies and organizations, both internally and externally.
  • Adapts to change by viewing difficult situations and/or problems as opportunities for improvement; actively embraces change.
  • Analyzing and solving complex problems using multiple data sources.
  • Serves as a clinical coding subject matter expert.

Working hours: Flexible Work Schedule, Monday – Friday

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodation. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Active certified coder through AAPC and/or AHIMA required.
  • RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CCS, COC, CPC-H, or CCS-P certification required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a certified coder.
  • Minimum of 1 year EPIC experience preferred. Ability to maintain a 97% coding accuracy rate and meet required productivity guidelines.
  • Prior knowledge of hospital coding and billing, with a focus on Medicare guidelines preferred.
  • Prior Evaluation and Management (E/M) coding experience.
  • Prior coding experience within a teaching hospital environment including familiarity with shared visits, and knowledge of the proper modifier selection.

  • Must possess interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situatios.
  • Position continually requires demonstrated self-confidence, skill, and diplomacy.
  • Communicate concisely and effectively both verbally and written; utilizing proper grammar and telephone etiquette is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, listen, and review. Employees must use their hands to utilize a computer keyboard and mouse and operate office equipment. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms, as well as a lift to 20 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

An employee works in a temperature-controlled office environment. The employee sits at a desk during regularly scheduled work hours, answers and makes calls using a standard telephone, types on a standard keyboard, and reads and comprehends information from a computer terminal and/or written resources.
