Job Summary:
This person provides executive leadership for the Riley Institute and is responsible for its success and sustainability.
Job Description:
Responsibilities:
Develops and implements strategic direction for the Riley Institute and its principal business units, including the Center for Education Policy and Leadership, the Center for Diversity Strategies, the Center for Critical Issues, and the community solutions-focused research consultancy. In collaboration with the Provost, ensures alignment with institutional goals and priorities. Oversees the assessment and evaluates the progress toward goals.
In conjunction with the leaders of each business unit, sets long-range plans for their work and provides leadership for their work to conceive, plan, fund and launch new Riley Institute initiatives.
Develops, manages and supports the Institute's senior leadership team, including directors of each of the Institute's three centers of work; Research Director; and Director of Marketing and Communications. Seeks counsel from Riley Institute Founding Director/Senior Counsel; provides leadership for and supports all Riley Institute divisions and programs.
Responsible for staff selection, development, wellbeing, retention, and capacity to contribute to the Institute's mission; responsible for all department-level human resources decisions connected to the Institute, including shaping new and existing position descriptions, hires, compensation decisions, and professional development. Directly supervises and undertakes annual performance reviews for six positions; approves all position descriptions for and all new hires within Riley Institute business units.
In collaboration with Riley Institute senior leadership, develops and oversees the budget and implementation of a comprehensive, sustainable revenue plan for all Institute activities, including for Riley Institute endowments and for specific programs and activities, to include corporate, foundation, and individual donors; grants; fee-for-service contracts; program tuitions; etc. Writes grant proposals or provides leadership and review of Riley Institute grant proposals. Collaborates with Furman's Office of Development and Grants Office where appropriate. Cultivates direct relationships with potential donors and makes donor asks where appropriate.
In conjunction with the Riley Institute business manager, oversees all aspects of Institute finances and ensures the best management of Riley Institute resources to achieve Institute goals and objectives; works with business manager to ensure production of ongoing, accurate projections of revenues and expenses for all endowments and programs.
Provides leadership for Institute strategic communications plan.
Manages strategic relationships with Diversity Leadership in Action, South Carolina ETV, SC legislature, SC Governor's Office, Mott Foundation, SC Department of Education, Institute for Child Success, corporate partners, and numerous other partners to strengthen, support and advocate on behalf of the Institute and Furman.
Ensures Institute-wide collaboration with other Furman Institutes (Hill, IACH, and Shi), with academic departments, and with other Furman departments to create programs and opportunities for students, faculty, alumni and community partners.
Serves as an ambassador for Furman and for the Riley Institute, connecting specific Riley Institute programs to new or existing organizations across South Carolina and nationally.
Completes performance review process with supervisor to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and university goals.
Follows safety procedures.

Reports To: Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost
Work Conditions: Work is performed under usual office conditions at Furman.
Relationships:
Continuous contact with members of own work unit to plan, coordinate, problem solve, exchange information, and make suggestions related to mutual and institutional goals. Direct reports include Director, Center for Critical Issues; Director, Center for Diversity Strategies; Director, Research and Evaluation; Director, Marketing and Communications; Business Manager; Director, SCALE and Afterschool Initiatives.
Frequent interaction with Furman senior leadership and administrators, faculty and staff to exchange information, engage in creative problem solving, and explore opportunities for new initiative; cultivation of strong relationships across campus within such administrative support units as Human Resources and Finance.
Frequent contact with such external constituents as elected officials, business, nonprofit and other community leaders, other educational institutions, foundations, community organizations, etc., and with potential donors.
Responsibility for Final Decisions:
Responsible for own work.
Reviews work to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and deadlines.
Tasks often involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes and steps before rendering final decisions. Work includes decisions regarding programs and allocation of resources.
Education/Skill Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with at least 15 years of experience in related field or graduate/professional degree with at least 10 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive, fund and launch robust and effective initiatives that advance equity and social and economic progress.
  • Well-developed understanding of a broad range of community-solutions-focused settings and how they come together to advance equity and social and economic progress in South Carolina and nationally.
  • Ability to professionally represent the Riley Institute in the highest levels of university, community, state and national settings.
  • Track record of creating effective proposals to secure grants and other funds that support initiatives that advance social and economic progress.
  • Ability to manage an enterprise financial context comprising multiple revenue streams and compatible and competing funding needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to humanely hire, develop, support and retain effective staff members.
  • Experience developing strategic direction and short-, mid,- and long-range plans for an organization with multiple and varied programs; ability to translate strategy into goals, outcomes, metrics, and timelines.
  • Understanding of the basics of research methods and data collection, interpretation, analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff at Furman.
  • Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills.Education Requirements:
