GAI Consultants is Hiring a Remote Architectural Historian 2

GAI Consultants, Inc. is looking for an Architectural Historian 2 to serve in our Pittsburgh (Homestead), PA office. This position can be staffed in other GAI locations and has the ability to be remote or hybrid. The ideal candidate would be experienced in conducting archival research, architectural and historical resource surveys, preparing architectural inventory forms, and preparing compliance survey reports.
Duties:
  • Experience and knowledge of Section 106 (NHPA).
  • Conduct archival and background research.
  • Conduct architectural and historical field surveys (requiring overnight travel).
  • Prepare architectural inventory forms.
  • Author architectural and historical resources reports.
  • Prepare Determination of Eligibility forms.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree or a master’s degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Must be organized and write concisely and clearly.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong writing and communication skills.
  • Candidate must have a current driver's license.
  • Ability to read and navigate field maps
Physical Demands:
  • Please note that this position requires frequent overnight travel so candidates must be willing and open to travel locally on a monthly basis.
  • Most of the survey work will be limited to public roads with some travel to agricultural areas including back roads.
  • GAI provides hotel/lodging, a vehicle, and per diem to cover food costs.
General Characteristics
  • Continues to acquire intermediate skills; follows procedures; firm understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities; good organizational skills; work in weather conditions (heat, cold, etc.); works with safety in mind, must be flexible with work hours and willingness to travel up to 100% during the week days and occasional weekend travel and/or work, able to walk/stand and conduct applicable field work for extended hours, solid understanding of data base software, Excel, PowerPoint and Word; must do a variety of administrative functions via use of the computer.

  • 6 Years of Experience
Education
  • M.A. Degree in History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or associated degree
Certification/Licensure
  • Driver’s License
Technical Responsibilities
  • Understanding of National Historic Preservation Act, advanced knowledge of architectural styles, trends, and date identification, architectural attributes and materials, excellent field skills, working knowledge of GIS databases, strong photography skills, strong mapping skills, excellent note taking skills, accurate completion of field forms, excellent archival research skills; especially primary sources, sketch maps, navigation skills, preparing and writing sections of reports, preparation of report figures.
  • Employee responsible for obtaining their basic field kits, must possess steel toed shoes, responsibility for maintaining and upkeep of company issued field equipment.
  • Advanced knowledgeable in the use of GPS locational equipment.
Project and Task Management
  • Responsible for personal task management and adherence to deadlines and scope.
Management Responsibility
  • Quality control of field work and documentation, required to conduct field surveys independently, responsible for staying on budget and schedule, discusses work performance with supervisors, ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work with or without a supervisor present; ability to take direction from a leader, must be capable of working independently.
Communication Skills
  • Possess oral and written communication skills; interacts well with other staff, clients, landowners, contractors, etc.; communicates well with agency officials, ability to function positively in a team environment; ability to communicate effectively with supervisor, coworkers and with lesser experienced personnel, ability to convey field and research results clearly and concisely to senior level cultural resources staff; coordinates well with other non-cultural resources GAI staff.
