Summary:
Reporting to the Head Athletic Trainer, the Athletic Trainer provides equitable athletic training services to Gallaudet University's athletics teams and student-athletes.
Job Description:
  • Provides athletic training services to Gallaudet University's athletics teams and student-athletes; and works proactively to prevent or reduce the possibility of athletic-related injuries and illnesses.
  • Conducts on-site evaluations and cares for athletic-related injuries for home and visiting teams' student-athletes (as necessary) and makes decisions about safely returning to play or discontinuing them.
  • Creates rehabilitation and treatment plans for student-athlete's athletic-related injuries.
  • Provides coverages in home competitions and practices as scheduled; and travels with the athletics team for away competitions as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer.
  • Properly records and documents all athletic-related injuries and illnesses and maintains confidentiality of all records.
  • Assumes the responsibility for administrative tasks such as medical record-keeping, insurance claims, making medical referrals, inventory, or any other duties as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer.
  • Works closely with physicians and other allied health care professionals providing care to student-athletes.
  • Supervises intern athletic training students and student workers if necessary.
  • Provides consultation with Head Coaches regarding athletic injuries and student-athletes' health and wellness.
  • Adheres to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and affiliated conferences' athletic training policies, guidelines, and operating codes and reports violations in a timely manner.
  • Maintains current ATC certification by the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers in good standing as well as maintaining DC Athletic Trainer Licensure.
  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS), Professional Rescuers, or above certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Works directly with the assigned sports teams and/or assists with other teams, as needed or as assigned, and to follow the University's Bilingual Mission Framework.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Demonstrates a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
  • Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
  • Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well-being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols, as well as promptly reporting any safety hazards or incidents.
  • Performs related and other duties as needed.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of three years of professional experience with athletic training, physical therapy, or a related field.
  • Athletic Trainer Certification (ATC) from the Board of Certification (BOC).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree.
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language
  • CPR/AED/First Aid instructor certification from American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

  • Strong multi-tasking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse student-athletes and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
Additional Position Details:
  • This is a 10-month position.
  • The incumbent must obtain the DC Athletic Trainer license upon employment.
  • If the incumbent has no knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is expected to achieve an ASLPI score of 1 plus within two years of employment. If the incumbent is hired with some knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is expected to achieve an ASLPI score of 2 within two years of employment. The supervisor must ensure that the incumbent receives the necessary support to meet this goal.
