The Detroit Free Press is hiring! Join one of the Midwest’s largest and best newsrooms as we tell the stories of a fascinating and complicated metro market. We are looking for a talented and experienced editor to lead a team of reporters covering a range of marquee beats.
This person will have the skills to both raise the quality of journalism and increase the news organization’s digital audience. We seek a visionary who can inspire a team of reporters to reach new heights while implementing strategies and content initiatives that result in audience growth. The right candidate is passionate about excellence in journalism that’s essential to the lives of metro Detroiters and has long-lasting impacts. We need you to help us elevate our news quality and storytelling and meet our ambitious goals.
Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of reporters covering news.
  • Devise an editorial strategy that serves both informed and uninformed audiences in the metro area with essential news and information, while also telling enterprise stories about metro Detroit for readers, viewers and listeners across the nation.
  • Plan compelling daily and enterprise coverage and keep a story budget.
  • Use analytics and other tools to shape coverage and drive new subscription starts.
  • Help process the team’s photos, audio and video.
  • Recruit and coach a diverse staff.
  • Provide great customer service.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional journalism experience. Editing experience is preferred, but senior reporters who have demonstrated leadership are encouraged to apply.
  • A clear-eyed vision for how to cover Detroit in new and exciting ways that explains what is happening and why, what that means and how its citizens can play an active role.
  • Exceptional core journalism skills (news judgment, reporting, producing, editing).
  • Ability to interpret and act on audience data.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction.
  • Curiosity and a hunger to learn.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Command of media law and ethics.
  • Commitment to fairness and equity.
  • Demonstrated ability to use social media.
