GAP Solutions, Inc. is Hiring a Lab Manager Near Bethesda, MD

Provide services as a Lab Manager in support of the overall functions of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and accurately complete laboratory logs (including those of cell lines, bacterial cultures, DNNRNAs and proteins/enzymes).
  • Order all laboratory consumables, supplies, and equipment necessary for keeping the lab stocked and operational.
  • Manage inventory and procure laboratory supplies, reagents and equipment when needed (billing paperwork is collected and organized).
  • Perform laboratory procedures (i.e., gel electrophoresis, enzymatic assays, culturing of eukaryotic or bacterial cells, preparation of tissue lysates, animal sample collection, imaging samples, etc.).
  • Independently assess and utilize methods and/or procedures for use in laboratory experiments.
  • Make modifications and improvements in laboratory methods/procedures to meet specific needs or experimental situations, including:
    • Buffer solution preparation
    • Developing and performing enzymatic assays
    • Spectrophotometric/fluorometric measurement of metabolites
    • Microorganism cell culture and mammalian tissue harvesting
    • Sample preparation for Proteomics/Mass Spectrometry
    • Sample preparation for Electron Microscopy
    • Molecular biology techniques
  • Operate and maintain electronic systems in the lab.
  • Perform instrument quality control to ensure user satisfaction.
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, including required documentation.
  • Generate, process and analyze datasets to be included in scientific reports; participate in the writing and preparation of scientific manuscripts.
  • Maintain log of laboratory safety compliance; ensure that regulations are being followed.
  • Train all new lab personnel in research etiquette and safely conducting research that complies to a Bio-Safety Level II lab
  • Ensure that lab members are compliant on NIH required training
  • Manage chemical, bio-hazard, biological waste in compliance with Division of Health and Safety (DOHS) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
  • Work products and documents related to maintaining and completing laboratory logs; manage inventory and procure laboratory supplies, reagents and equipment; perform laboratory procedures.
  • Work products and documents related to assessing and utilizing methods and/or procedures for use in laboratory experiments; make modifications and improvements in laboratory methods/procedures to meet specific needs or experimental situations.
  • Work products and documents related to operating and maintaining electronic systems in the laboratory; perform instrument quality control to ensure user satisfaction; maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, including required documentation; generate, process and analyze datasets; prepare reports and articles.
  • Maintaining electronic laboratory notebook to contain all experiments, protocols, methods, data, and analysis for gathering findings for publications.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related discipline; three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelor's degree is equivalent to a Master's degree.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a research laboratory environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff
  • Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
  • Dynamic personality with a high level of interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively with staff at all levels of an organization.
  • Detail-oriented in lab work and record-keeping.
  • Certified to work with animals and perform animal surgeries compliant under the NIH Animal Surveillance Program
  • Member of NHLBI Lab Representatives Committee
  • Member of Safety Committee
