Definition
Work involves planning and providing a daily program of developmentally appropriate, academically oriented, nurturing, and enriching experiences for elementary school-age children. Work involves assisting with the administrative, and parent communication functions of the program. Employees are also responsible for implementing activities as planned, managing the program staff and operations, maintaining communication and relationships with the assigned school site administration and teachers, supervising students during activities, engaging in activities with the children, and maintaining relationships with the community. In some cases, the Assistant Site Coordinator is the spokesperson for the program, representing it to the community and the media. Reports to the appropriate supervisor. This is an 8-hour-a-day (10:00-6:00), 12 month, Monday-Friday position and may require occasional evening hours.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Primarily responsible for ensuring the A.S.P.I.R.E. program at the assigned school provides quality care that expands children’s experiences, extends their learning, and provides warm and caring support.
• Assists in planning, developing, and providing program activities, coordinates the daily set-up and close-down of the program to ensure children have access to a variety of developmentally-appropriate program resources, interest centers, and activities.
• Implements activities as planned, leads, assists, and acts as a role-model participant in both active and sedentary indoor and outdoor lessons, games, and activities; supervises students during activities.
• Prepares and maintains student, staff, business management, and programming reports, records, and other documents as required by or appropriate to the program’s administration.
• Performs or assists with various administrative functions of the program such as: composing, copying, and distributing monthly newsletters; planning and preparing activity schedules; taking daily attendance; duplicating materials; receiving and recording permission forms for field trips, etc.
• Verifies snack/meal availability and completes or reviews snack/meal rosters.
• Uses positive reinforcement and developmentally-appropriate guidance techniques and consequences to encourage appropriate behavior, and confers with administrators and parents to resolve behavior issues.
• Communicates with parents about children's daily activities; participates in parent conferences as needed; and notifies classroom teachers of children’s needs.
• Helps orient staff and provides on-site training, and helps nurture creativity and professional growth in staff.
• Helps facilitate the work of substitutes to cover staff absences.
• Maintains current certifications in CPR and First Aid; administers basic first aid and medications, and contacts parents or emergency services in case of a child’s illness or injury.
• Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly environment for the program.
• Receives incoming telephone calls, emails, and written correspondence and provides information regarding program operations, procedures, and regulations, or routes to appropriate personnel.
• Attends workshops, classes, seminars, conferences, lectures, etc. to meet district professional development requirements and reviews school-age care resources and professional journals as appropriate, to enhance and maintain knowledge of trends and developments in after-school care.
• Manages facility and buses.
• Manages student discipline.
• Assists with scheduling program classes and activities.
• Meets with teachers regularly to evaluate program implementation.
• Plans and arranges field trips. 
• Plans and arranges family nights (2). 
• Inventories and monitors program resources. 
• Submits reports to ASPIRE Afterschool Program Administrator.
• Enrolls students in the ASPIRE summer program.
• Uses provided instructional, enrichment, and movement materials suitable for verbal and/or visual instruction of students with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturity.
• Provides general instruction in Character education, Math, Literacy, Science, and Social Studies.
• Provides individual and group support designed to meet individual needs and motivate students.
• Experience with varied forms of technology. 
• Additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to assist teachers or other staff members in arranging conferences with parents, or in explaining relevant district decisions to parents.
• Ability to work with social workers, school nurses, guidance counselors, or other staff members in helping students and parents to utilize community service agencies.
• Ability to plan and carry out programs related to family and school.
• Knowledge of basic office equipment including utilizing Microsoft Office and Google.
• Ability to meet the needs of all learners.
• Ability to coordinate and continuously support instruction.
• Ability to analyze situations, determine possible options, and make appropriate decisions based on the facts.
• Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for students, etc.
• Ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.
• Ability to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials, etc. using a prescribed format.
• Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
• Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
• Ability to manage instructional time.
• Ability to manage student behavior.
• Ability to consult with parents, teachers, and the community to enhance the learning of students.
• Ability to monitor student performance.
• Ability to interact within the educational environment.
• Ability to perform non-instructional duties as assigned.
• Understands the growth and development of elementary children.
Physical Requirements
• Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly.
• Requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, hearing, reaching, standing, lifting, walking, grasping, and talking.
• Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds by ear.).
• Must possess the visual acuity to prepare data, work with records processes, and do extensive reading and research. 
• Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, etc.
Minimum Training and Experience 
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or higher from a regionally accredited college/university.
• Must hold a North Carolina license or be eligible for a license.
• Has 3 years of successful work in a school setting.
• Works collaboratively with others, while creating an enjoyable work environment.
• Exemplifies excellent customer service by making authentic connections with families, schools, and the community.
• Licensed as an Elementary Teacher (00025) preferred.
• Strong background in North Carolina Course of Study/Common Core and Essential.
