JOB DESCRIPTION

Naval Science/Senior Naval Science Instructor


JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT

Under the general supervision of the high school principal, the NNDCC Instruction will provide student cadets with instruction and leadership; oversee program implementation and development; act as a liaison between the program, school, parents and the community to promote the objectives, values and goals of the Navy National Defense Cadet Corps.


NATURE OF WORK

The NNCC Instructor will perform those duties pursuant to the current regulations, policies and procedures as established by the NSTC and the host school. In addition to the specific duties listed below, they may perform those collateral duties normally performed by and rotate among other faculty members, proving such duties do not interfere with the administration and operation of the NNDCC program. Specific duties and responsibilities or the SNSI include:


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Senior Naval Science Instructor (NSI/SNSI)
  • Applicants should have a letter from the Navy on letterhead certifying them as an eligible instructor & DD-214 Military Separation Letter
  • Must qualify for or possess a valid license to serve as NNDCC Instructor


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaching the prescribed NS1-NS4 Naval Science curriculum.
  • Instructing in military drill.
  • Counseling students in the NNDCC program.
  • Requiring NNDCC cadets to conduct themselves in a military manner at all times when the cadets are under naval supervision (i.e., when attending naval science classes, drills, or on authorized field trips/orientation cruises, etc.).
  • Ensuring NNDCC cadets in uniform observe the courtesies and traditions of the service.
  • Writing/updating lesson plans for the NNDCC curriculum and other lesson preparation requirements.
  • Requisitioning all government furnished equipment as authorized or allowed (includes uniforms, training aids, books, drill rifles, air rifles, and organizational equipment).
  • Arranging for cleaning and tailoring of uniforms.
  • Performing simple preventive maintenance of training aids and devices.
  • Inventory control of all government furnished equipment/materials (including annual wall-to-wall inventory).
  • Ensuring proper physical security of all government furnished equipment/materials.
  • Planning extracurricular activities for the NNDCC unit (including color/honor guard ceremonies, drill team and rifle team competitive meets, field trips, basic leadership training camps, ship cruises, etc.).
  • Preparing periodic reports on program administration and logistics.
  • Keeping current and abreast of new developments and organizations within the Navy.
  • Assessing unit processes to assure NNDCC program objectives are met.
  • Attending Navy sponsored training to keep abreast of current requirements of program management.
  • Taking courses of instruction to improve teaching abilities.
  • Establishing rapport with school counselors and faculty members.
  • Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, emotional, social and learning problems.
  • Making annual presentations of the NNDCC program to students at feeder schools for the purpose of recruiting new cadets into the program.
  • Maintaining financial accounts of operating budget
  • Preparing financial vouchers to the Navy for reimbursement of expenditures to the school made in support of the NNDCC program.
  • Informing the public of NNDCC activities and achievements by making full use of school publications as well as local news media.
  • Serving on routine committees or performing curricular or extracurricular duties normally performed by and rotated equitably among other faculty members.
  • Ensuring safety and well-being of cadets is observed at all times during cadets’ participation in NNDCC activities.
  • Ensuring non-discriminatory practices to and of cadets, and taking immediate corrective action when necessary.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Seeing to read a variety of materials.
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations.
  • Ability to bend, twist, stoop and reach.
  • Ability to push, pull and transport instructional materials.
  • Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation.
