Outdoor Mentor

Gateway Academy's starting wage for full-time residential, and outdoor community mentors is $17.00 per hour. All full-time mentors will receive an additional $1.00 boost through incremental pay increases within the first year of hire as follows:

• 6th Month Following Month of Hire
• 12th Month Following Month of Hire

EXPECTED WORK HOURS (This is a weekend position)

• Schedule (A): Friday (8 hours), Saturday (16 hours) & Sunday (16 hours).
• Alternative schedule (B): Friday (10 hours), Saturday (10 hours), Sunday (10 hours) any day Monday - Thursday (8 hours)

JOB SUMMARY Full-time outdoor experiential mentors will provide Gateway Academy youth with experiences that promote gains in self-esteem, personal growth and leadership skills. All instruction is therapeutically driven and intended to meet the needs of our students and their families. Mentors shall role model professionalism and exhibit appropriate boundaries for risk management in the community and while out on outdoor activities.

All eligible candidates shall possess the skills to supervise students during activities not limited to hiking, climbing, mountain biking, snowshoeing, paddle boarding, swimming, ski/snowboard and volunteer service learning.

Full-time outdoor mentors will possess one, some or all of the following qualifications.

• Skiing /Snowboarding Eligible candidates have the skills to provide students with ski/snowboard instruction, safety, and supervision while at the ski resort. (Seasonal ski pass will be provided or equal cash equivalent reimbursed)
• Previous professional instruction experience not required - Gateway Academy will provide in-house training on how to instruct ski/snowboarding.
• Indoor climbing Eligible candidates have the ability/level of skill to supervise student climbers and belayers throughout roped indoor activities.
• Mountain Biking Eligible candidates can ride a bike and confidently supervise students on beginner-intermediate terrain. (Bike can be provided)

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide youth with mentorship, life-skills, role modeling and instruction.
• Supervision and advocacy for youth in line with program policy and procedures.
• Strong communication skills and ability to tailor instruction based upon student needs.
• Ability to maintain a safe, fun and intentional learning atmosphere for students.
• Maintain a positive attitude and atmosphere for both students and co-workers.
• Provide support to the Gateway Team in all aspects of indoor/outdoor and community based programming.
• Provide student supervision and instruction that optimizes low-risk outcomes for students in the following: indoor climbing, skiing, snowboarding, swimming, paddle-boarding, hiking, and during travel / while transporting students.
• Responsible driver for program youth and employees.
• Provide youth with basic first-aid and injury assessment as needed.
• All other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Must possess a current and valid driver’s license.
• Must maintain all required certifications such as: (CPR/first aid, food handlers)
• Able to lift over 25 lbs.
• Able to safely facilitate outdoor activities with sound judgment.
• Demonstrate healthy, appropriate, and professional boundaries with students.
• Able to work year-round, including some holidays.
• Must be a collaborative team player with an eagerness to grow and develop professionally.
• Previous experience in the outdoors or wilderness, and residential treatment preferred
• Able to make a 1 yr. minimum time commitment.
• College level education is preferred but not required.
