Staff Engineer – Enterprise Data ControlsPosition SummaryGEICO is looking for a Enterprise Data Controls Staff Engineer who will be instrumental in building and improving data management controls for our organization. You will have a great deal of autonomy to apply your in-depth knowledge of data governance, cybersecurity and privacy frameworks and best practices. This role requires a self-starter who can deliver results independently and aid in supporting other team members. Our Enterprise Data Controls (EDC) team reports to the Senior Director, Data Controls & Standards Engineering. As a member of EDC, the Staff Engineer will have a high-profile role in executing and continually enhancing GEICO’s data governance program as part of the First Line of Defence in our Enterprise Risk Management framework.
Position DescriptionOur Staff Engineer is a key member of the engineering staff working across the organization to provide a friction-less experience to our customers and maintain the highest standards of data protection, governance and availability. Our team thrives and succeeds in delivering high-quality technology products and services in a hyper-growth environment where priorities shift quickly. The ideal candidate has solid writing skills and a desire to “get under the hood” and ask pertinent questions to resolve complex and perhaps misunderstood data management issues and an ability to suggest pragmatic solutions to novel data privacy and governance issues is an asset in this position.
Position ResponsibilitiesAs a Staff Engineer, you will:
  • Lead data control compliance initiatives, which includes managing a large amount of technical and procedural information
  • Coordinate responses to high priority ‘data defect’ events
  • Present data management processes and requirements to stakeholders across various business units, including Internal Audit, Compliance and Audit, Finance, Legal, HR, Tech Services, etc.
  • Refine, implement, and document data controls designed to support the Data Governance program at GEICO
  • Collaborate with business units, advocating for the Governance program and enabling them to create value from GEICOs data assets through successful governance frameworks
  • Advise on data management standards and best practices; identify future-state requirements for data control toolsets
  • Design and document data governance standards and processes in response to policies authored by Second Line.
  • Design and document controls in response to L1 and L2 risks identified in the Enterprise Risk taxonomy
  • Mentor other engineers
  • Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams
Qualifications
  • Highly skilled in independently identifying and resolving complex data security, privacy and governance concerns with a pragmatic approach and an appropriate sense of urgency
  • Thorough understanding of the data lifecycle, secure application development, and sensitive data protection approaches including access controls and cryptography
  • Experience drafting and refining privacy or cyber-related policies and processes
  • Experience developing pragmatic risk function metrics
  • Ability to learn technical concepts and adapt to new technologies quickly
  • Ability to easily communicate in a clear, concise, and professional manner
  • Proficient in Outlook 365, MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Ability to excel in fast-paced, startup-like environment
  • Experience with CMDB, asset catalogs a plus
Experience
  • 8 years of work experience in the data privacy or cybersecurity space in one or more large, complex financial services organizations
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience
Annual Salary$110,000.00 - $236,500.00
The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
