Job Description:

Role and Responsibilities

  • Monitors and oversees the daily execution of our Plan of the week for each responsible Cost Account and is driven to deliver products in accordance to our published shipyard schedules.
  • Responsible for all production related activities of the assigned stage of construction areas and decides what and when it gets accomplished.
  • Provides leadership and guidance for the Safety action teams to ensure their effectiveness and value. Role model and leader to develop a safety culture that puts people first in the business.
  • Provides oversight and leadership to maintain a productive and positive spirit of the management and trades teams. Actively seeks out opportunities to recognize performance or provide mentorship to improve performance of individuals and the Area teams.
  • Communicates frequently with the areas to ensure the teams understand expectations and recognizes performance of the teams. Leads daily meetings to build confidence and provide direction where needed.
  • In times of conflict management or problems with the production line, provides leadership, good judgement, and well thought out decisions to ensure best possible outcomes.
  • Supports a culture of total ownership at all levels of the organization, employee engagement and empowerment at the lowest level of the organization.
  • Actively seeks out opportunities to improve the business, reduce rework activities, and identifies opportunities to move work scope activities that will benefit profitability across multiple cost accounts at BIW.
  • Provides direction, support and solutions to Corrective Action Requests for our Navy Customer.
  • Maintains a trustworthy and credible relationship with our represented leadership and the workforce.
  • Embodies a culture that is process discipline driven and enables our workforce to deliver 1st time quality workmanship.
  • While ensuring we build our product in accordance with our contract and its specification, maintains a credible and collaborative relationship with our Supervisor of Shipbuilding team.
  • Maintains a high level of integrity that aligns itself with the GD Ethos - Honesty, Transparency, Trust, Aligned with company Values.
  • Oversees flow disruption activities in each area and influences support areas to get issues resolved in a timely manner.
  • Monitors productivity of the workforce and looks for opportunities to eliminate non-value added activities.

Strategic Driven leader

  • Establishes a culture that fosters and reinforces standards for safety, productivity, and quality compliance through mentorship or enforcement.
  • Drives the organization to continually improve, seeks out opportunities to benchmark other companys successes or incorporates best practices from sources internally and externally to this BIW.
  • Maintains vigilance on all the plant equipment and supporting assets to maximize the potential of each facility. Seek opportunities to recommend capital upgrades or equipment that will provide a profitable ROI.
  • In collaboration with the materials folks, works toward ensuring we manage our materials so they dont get lost or damaged prior to installation.
  • Directs continuous process initiatives to improve cost, schedule, quality and safety.
  • Has a long term view on area performance as it relates to safety cost, schedule and quality.
  • Works cooperatively and fosters relationships with our support organizations to develop and implement strategies and agreements that will improve area performance.
  • Develops and mentors Management and Supervision talent to prepare them for future leadership positions.

Earned Value Data Analysis

  • Manages Cost Account activity, approves variances, and provides explanations for each CAM.
  • Monitors and analyzes data in our integrated data management system to manage the business as it relates to Earned Value trends, Cost performance Indicators, Cost/schedule Variances, Plan of the week compliance, flow disruptions, staffing, work order burn down on products, material availability and other production related metrics. Effectively uses that data to influence shop floor performance activities and provides direction accordingly.
  • Provides direct input to developing, managing, and submitting EAC forecasts for each Cost Account in his/her area of responsibility.
  • Responsible for weekly CAM oversight that reports to Senior Level Management and provides explanations for area performance and communicates needs to supporting organizations in the interest of improving performance of the areas.
Required/Preferred Education/Training:
  • Graduate Apprentice and/or Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required.
Required/Preferred Experience:
  • Ten years proven manufacturing and/or shipbuilding experience in management roles required.
  • Effective leadership, communication, organizational skills and team-building skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate to all levels of management with both verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commits to work; adapts and remains flexible; maintains ethical behavior; is professional.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and utilization of production processes, methods, and technology including process disciplined execution.
  • Respect and acknowledge shipyard safety practices.
  • Execute work with first time quality.
  • Proven ability in people environment.
