Job Description

Bath Iron Works is seeking a dynamic, proactive, and decisive Director of Workers' Compensation and Risk Management. This senior insurance and risk management position holds the authority to make strategic decisions affecting the organization’s risk management. The ideal candidate will be a recognized leader with excellent communication skills, a strategic and creative mindset, and the ability to drive performance and initiate change.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Strategic Management:
    • Lead the development, innovation, governance, and management necessary to identify, evaluate, mitigate, and monitor the company's operational and strategic risks.
    • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, agency standards, and the strategic imperatives of the organization.
    • Utilize business process knowledge and operational perspective to provide solutions for non-insurance related business risk issues.
    • Seek ways to optimize risks to provide a competitive business advantage.
  • Insurance Management:
    • Oversee the company’s insurance programs, manage claims and loss control activities.
    • Manage relationships with third-party service providers including brokers, insurers, and TPAs.
    • Prepare loss analyses and budgets, identify exposures, recommend and implement approved solutions.
    • Promote loss prevention, update, and monitor compliance with company insurance procedures
    • Support BIW’s maintenance of insurance coverage through General Dynamics’ corporate insurance programs, including underwriting information compilation, coverage placement, claims administration, and loss forecasting.
  • Workers’ Compensation Self-Insurance Program:
    • Direct the administration of first-party workers' compensation claims, including reporting, investigation, analysis, litigation management, and resolution.
    • Manage litigated and moderately complex claims with significant settlement authority.
    • Communicate claims management philosophy and strategy to BIW senior leadership.
    • Maintain and manage relationships with claims adjusters, insurers, outside legal counsel, and other claims-related parties.
    • Ensure compliance with federal and state reporting requirements to maintain self-insurance authority.
    • Provide financial analysis and forecasting of losses to assist in overhead cost control and forward pricing estimates.
    • Support external and internal audit activities associated with SOX controls, regulatory compliance, and actuarial liability valuations.
    • Manage BIW’s self-insured workers’ compensation program and supervise a team of adjusters and administrative professionals involved with claim adjudication.
  • Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Support:
    • Support the company’s EHS functions and programs to reduce accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • Stay updated on relevant laws and regulations affecting workers’ compensation and risk management.
    • Ensure company compliance with OSHA standards and other regulatory requirements.

Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field required.
  • Advanced degree (MBA, JD, etc.) preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in workers’ compensation and risk management.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a leadership role, managing teams and projects.

Certifications

  • Professional certifications such as ARMS (Associate in Risk Management), CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter), or similar are highly desirable.

  • Strong knowledge of workers’ compensation laws and regulations.

  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team.
  • Proficiency in risk management software and tools.
