Job Description
Department: Research and Development
Position Title: Tool Development Engineer
Position Reports To: Tooling Development Manager
Objectives:
This engineer will be responsible for the development of new products and the design of prototype tooling for those new products. Responsibilities will include leading development efforts for new products which meet internal and external customer needs, design and/or procurement of new prototype tooling, provide Engineering input and procurement support of new production tooling. These efforts are expected to be on time, within established budgets, and with effectively managed project documentation. Upon arrival of new tooling, the engineer will participate in the group's successful transition of the project to the Commercialization team and Production Group. This role will require the timely and effective interdepartmental communication of ongoing projects by leading regular meetings, developing timelines, and providing other updates, as necessary.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop new products and design of protype tooling or procurement of prototype tooling.
  • Develop project timelines and identify critical deliverables with due dates.
  • Support the Product Design and Development with the development and execution of Fitness For Use testing procedures that provide data-driven results to stakeholders.
  • Work cross-functionally to develop production methods and procedures.
  • Assist the Pilot Plant and production plant product development trials and trial documentation.
  • Support the procurement of new production tooling as necessary.
  • Support the start-up of new production tooling as necessary.
  • Provide input to the Plant and Process Engineering teams to develop automation and improvement to operations, as necessary.
  • Participate in the troubleshooting of issues with existing production tooling, as necessary.
  • Must be available to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Demonstrates ability to work without supervision.
  • Other duties, as necessary.
OTHER REQUIREMENS:
  • Strong ability to develop project structure, scope, timelines, schedule, Project management software.
  • Ability to provide direction and support during projects with Commercialization Manufacturing team when needed.
  • Strong ability to lead an effective multi-discipline project team.
  • Strong ability to establish and build relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrates above average mechanical aptitude skills.
  • Strong ability to convert required tooling improvements into design.
  • Strong ability to design with manufacturing and safety in mind.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Demonstrates strong troubleshooting/root cause analysis ability.
  • Strong ability to apply engineering principles to tooling design for relevant plastic parts and packaging.
  • Exhibit knowledge of plastic thermoforming material properties.
  • Exhibit knowledge of thermoforming equipment and automation.
  • Demonstrates ability to identify and validate fitness for use requirements.
Requirements
Qualifications:
  • BS Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of the Plastics Industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of Machining and CNC programming preferred.
  • Experience in Engineering project management.
  • Speaking and presentation skills to conduct effective meetings.
  • Above average knowledge of PC and Network based software including Word Processing, Spreadsheet and Database applications.
  • Above average CAD skills with Solidworks or Fusion 360 experience preferred.
  • Understanding of plastic physical properties and behaviors.
