About the Department:

Intercollegiate Athletics serves 500 student-athletes in 22 NCAA Division I sports. We are a proud member of the Atlantic 10 Conference with 17 Conference Championships, NCAA Championships in Women’s Soccer and Men’s Indoor Track, an NCAA Final Four appearance with Men’s Basketball, and over 30 individual National Champions. We are student-focused, education-centered, and committed to providing transformational experiences for our student-athletes and staff. Our three priorities are to educate, compete, and engage.

Educate: Prioritize academic achievement and recruit student-athletes who can be successful academically, strengthen ICA’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, and provide consistent education for coaches and sport administrators.

Compete: Position teams to consistently compete for conference success and recruit student-athletes who possess the ability to excel athletically from a conference and national perspective.

Engage: Prioritize the experience and personal well-being of student-athletes, develop and renovate athletics facilities, generate resources necessary to support the student-athlete experience, and foster and inspire partnerships within the department, University, and the community.

About the Position:

The primary role of the Assistant Coach is to provide teaching, coaching and technical expertise needed to allow the student-athlete to compete at their highest competitive potential. Additionally, it is also a primary responsibility of the position to be cognitive of all coaching and/or teaching duties associated with the program. This is to include but not be limited to the oversight and management of the safety and well-being of those student athletes assigned to their coaching care. The Assistant Coach is expected to act on behalf of the Head Coach in their absence on any and all related program issues. The Assistant Coach assists the Head Coach in all aspects of a highly competitive Division I program.
This position is expected to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends, and to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes sound teaching techniques in the conduct of game preparation and practice sessions;
  • Assists in making strategic decisions in contest situations;
  • Effectively prepares and organizes pre-season, in-season and post-season conditioning programs and practice sessions;
  • Oversees the strength and conditioning development of the athletes;
  • Assists the Head Coach in the evaluation of the student-athlete;
  • Is aware of and maintains a safe and healthy environment for the student-athlete;
  • Assists with implementing the game plans and offers recommendations for in-game adjustments;
  • Presents scouting information to coaching staff and team;
  • Coordinates opponent clip edits with Video Coordinator;
  • Effectively prepares and organizes pre-season, in-season and post-season conditioning programs and practice sessions;
  • Organizes and plans workouts;
  • Serves as defensive special team coordinator and leads the on-court player development in alignment with the Head Coach’s philosophy;
  • Builds relationships with prospective student-athletes, prospects, parents/families and high school coaches;
  • Holds scheduled on-campus and-off-campus visits with prospects and their families; 
  • Abides by and promotes the aims, goals, and objectives established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach;
  • Abides by and promotes the policies, guidelines, rules, regulations and criteria established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach for the student-athlete;
  • Knows, understands and assures that the student-athletes abide by all University, Atlantic 10, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Rules and Regulations;
  • Knows, understands and abides by all University, A10 and NCAA Rules and Regulations;
  • Is aware of and abides by the rules of confidentiality (Buckley Amendment);
  • Understands and abides by proper procedures of due process in dealing with the student-athlete and staff;
  • Follows the administrative procedures established by the University and the Department Staff Handbook;
  • Assists Head Coach in developing and implementing the overall recruiting strategy to effectively recruit the best student-athlete within the admissions, financial and regulatory constraints established by the University, A10, and NCAA;
  • Assists the External Unit with best practices and trends to help develop and execute engaging social media content;
  • Assists in the strategy of external recruiting announcements and basketball marketing/communication content; 
  • Serves as liaison to:
    • Equipment office staff to order, monitor and control all team equipment;
    • Business Office and Coaches Support Assistant on program operations; logistics, planning and team travel; and
    • Academic Services (study hall and tutoring); attains SAT/ACT scores, applications, transcripts; 
  • Participates in fundraising, NIL efforts, and special events;
  • Utilizes Transfer Portal to study and evaluate potential recruits; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President/Director of Intercollegiate Athletics or Sport Administrator. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree or training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree;
  • Demonstrated experience coaching at the college level and/or collegiate/professional playing experience in sport of basketball;
  • Working knowledge of NCAA, Conference (A10), and state rules and regulations;
  • Solid demonstrated knowledge of the sport, including rules, strategies, and techniques;
  • Ability to organize, develop, and execute recruitment plans;
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students;
  • Ability to motivate and inspire players to achieve their full potential;
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities;
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain); and
  • Valid driver's license: must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver’s licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coaching experience in a NCAA Division I level program; and
  • Knowledge of recruitment techniques and demonstrated ability to bring in high-level prospects.
