About the Department:

Northern Virginia’s tech economy is booming, and George Mason University is in the heart of the activity. George Mason University’s Office of Entrepreneurship & Innovation (OEI) resides within the Provost’s Office, and works collaboratively with stakeholders across the university and in the community.

The Mason Innovation Exchange (MIX) is the common ground on Mason’s campus that teaches and shows that everyone at Mason can be an innovator and entrepreneur. The Makerspace, Fabrication Lab, Media Lab, and Incubator spaces provide training and equipment, and encourage creativity, discovery, and innovation for every member of the George Mason community.

About the Position:

The Mason Innovation Exchange (MIX) Makerspace is seeking a proactive and dynamic MIX Operations Coordinator to join our team for this part-time position. This pivotal role involves close collaboration with, assistance to, and reporting directly to the MIX Manager & Events Coordinator. The successful candidate will be instrumental in optimizing the operational efficiency of both the MIX Makerspace and MIX Media Lab environments. Responsibilities include managing student staff, orchestrating staff schedules, working with the staff team to ensure MIX equipment is maintained and in optimal working order, ensuring a consistent supply of necessary materials, and designing and conducting 4-6 engaging workshops weekly for various skill levels. This role is crucial in supporting the MIX Manager to develop high-level programming, enhance outreach efforts, and spearhead advanced initiatives. Our aim is to foster inclusive STEM programs, encourage entrepreneurial ventures, and enhance inter-departmental collaboration within Mason Enterprise.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaboration and Support: Assist in the creation of initiatives that encourage departmental collaboration and support Mason Enterprise's objectives of advancing STEM education and entrepreneurship.
  • Event Planning and Coordination: Manage and schedule event requests across various MIX-managed spaces. Provide assistance and coordination for groups using these spaces, including scheduling staff for events outside standard operating hours. Serve as the primary contact for inquiries regarding MIX operations, facilities, and programs.
  • Student Staff Management and Coordination: Lead the recruitment, training, and supervision of student staff to support daily operations and workshops. Efficiently manage student staff schedules to optimize makerspace operations.
  • Workshop Development and Delivery: Create and deliver 4-6 tailored workshops weekly (this may include the same workshops repeated twice within one week) that appeal to the MIX community's diverse interests and skill levels. Topics should encompass equipment training as well as innovative and creative methods.
  • Supply Management: Oversee the inventory of supplies and materials, ensuring resources are adequately stocked for MIX activities and workshops.
  • Marketing and Social Media: Assist MIX Manager with all aspects of promoting MIX on media outlets, and supervising the work of responsible MIX interns in charge of social media posts.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Identify any operational issues with makerspace equipment and communicate that with the MIX Manager, Fab Lab Coordinator, or other staff members to ensure equipment upkeep, maintenance, safety, functionality, and user-friendliness.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Experience in crafting and conducting workshops or educational programs.
  • Experience in organizational communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Experience in a position requiring the balance of multiple tasks and prioritization.
  • Strong passion for STEM education, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
  • Familiarity with a range of Makerspace equipment, 3D printing, laser engraving/cutting.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability and capacity to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology, Education, or a related field.
  • Proven experience (1 to 2 years of prior experience) in workshop or lab management, ideally within an educational or makerspace setting.
  • 1 to 2 years of proven experience in crafting and conducting workshops or educational programs.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of a broad spectrum of fabrication and electronic equipment.
  • 1 to 2 years of management experience.
  • Demonstrated Equipment Proficiency: Candidates should have familiarity and experience with, including, but not limited to, the following equipment:
    • CNC Router, Vertical Mill, Metal Lathe, MIG/TIG Welding, Laser Cutting and Engraving, Bandsaws, Miter Saws, Vacuum Former, Metal Fabrication Equipment (Shear, Brake, Roller), Drill Press, Power Tools (Grinders, Drills, Sanders), 3D Printers (SLA and FDM), and Electronics Tools (Soldering, Oscilloscopes, Microcontroller Programming). Sewing Machines, Embroidering Machine, etc.
  • Demonstrated exceptional organizational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and capacity to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
