Job Title: Senior Marine Corps Instructor (SMI)
Supervisor: Principal
FLSA: Exempt
Term of Employment: 240 days
Job Summary:Senior Marine Corps Instructors (SMCIs) lead the MCJROTC units in schools, reporting to an area manager. The SMCI is the program leader, taking the role of commanding officer. The SMCI is responsible for ensuring that the program follows the rules, regulations and procedures as prescribed by Marine Corps Service Training Command and the school or school district. Apart from the management responsibilities of the SMCI, both instructors share day-to-day job responsibilities.
Qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent training approved by the Marine Corps
  • Rank of Chief Warrant or Commissioned Officer
  • Certified by the U.S. Marine Corps as an instructor in the MCJROTC Program
  • Maintain physical and appearance standards set by the U.S. Marine Corps
  • Physically qualified to participate in military drill and military activities/ ceremonies
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as district administration may find appropriate and acceptable
Essential Duties:
  • Teaches a multi-subject ROTC curriculum
  • Instructs in military drill
  • Requisitions government equipment
  • Maintains government furnished uniforms
  • Surveys and disposes of worn and obsolete equipment
  • Performs preventative maintenance of Marine Corps furnished materials
  • Plans and conducts extracurricular activities
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the Marine Corps
  • Establishes rapport with counselors and teachers
  • Makes annual presentations to feeder schools on program
  • Contacts civic groups to promote program
  • Counsels students
  • Attends Marine Corps seminars to keep abreast of new developments
  • Takes courses to improve teaching abilities
  • Performs other tasks with reasonable accommodations as assigned by the supervisor

Instructor Eligibility Criteria:Instructors must apply for certification from the Marine Corps Training Command before they can apply for jobs. They typically have many years of active duty in a Marine Corps service, obtaining the rank of W-1 to O-10. Instructors have returned from service within the last six years, are in the reserves, have retired on medical grounds or are “gray area” reserve retirees. Additional physical requirements are also required for military instructors.
Other Duties:Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.
