Investment Operations Associate, Investment Office - Georgetown University
The long-germ objective of Georgetown's Investment Office for the endowment is to produce the highest investment return possible while maintaining an appropriate level of risk and liquidity in order to provide perpetual, sustainable support for the university. Meeting this objective involves designing an investment program that addresses the needs of current and future generations of students through balanced asset allocation, the selection of investment managers, and timely rebalancing of the investment portfolio.
The Investment Operations Associate provides accurate and timely investment accounting, performance and risk information, while performing appropriate reconciliations and control procedures to safeguard the University's investments. They help collect and aggregate investment information obtained from investment managers; and on a monthly basis, performs thorough reviews of all the activity reported by investment fund managers, reconciling it to the data reported by University's custodian.
The Investment Operations Associate records the respective investment transactions in internal systems, including University's general ledger, and prepares respective reporting for the Investment Office; and works with the University's accounting and tax offices, as well as external auditors, to ensure that investment related information is reported both timely and accurately. Reporting to the Director of Investment Operations, the Investment Operations Associate has duties that include but are not limited to:
Assist the Director of Investment Operations in preparing regular and ad-hoc investment portfolio monitoring reports for the University's pooled endowment and Retirement Plan: Weekly Cash Reports, Monthly Performance Reports, Monthly Exposure and Risk Reports, Quarterly Portfolio and Fund Monitoring Reports, Semi-Annual Tax office requests, and annual support schedules for the University and Retirement Plan financial statements audits.
Maintain accurate investment accounting records for investments in hedge funds, private portfolio funds, and direct investments included within the pooled endowment, separately invested endowments, and the Retirement Plan (GURP): a) Perform monthly accounting reviews (reconciliation between custodian accounting statements and internal reports); b) work independently with investment manager's back-office investment operations teams and University's custodian to resolve any discrepancies; and c) utilize the University's centralized accounting platform to book monthly investment-related journal entries.
Maintain and organize all documents received from current portfolio managers in a properly labeled filing system, work with investment managers to receive underlying positions for respective portfolios, and upload the aggregated information on risk management systems employed by the Investment Office. Also, collect fund manager provided distribution and capital call notices, record details in accounting platform, and reconcile the information to weekly cash and monthly custodian reports.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree with a major or minor in Accounting
Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in public accounting or financial asset management
Strong technical accounting and investment expertise, advanced Excel and data management, as well as sound working knowledge of various investment instruments, investment strategies and capital markets
Organized, detail oriented and extremely thorough while having the confidence and communication skills to ensure all work processes are completed accurately and timely.
Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to take initiative and critically analyze processes and procedures in a push toward constant improvement
Team oriented with ability to work well with diverse groups
Ability to analyze and synthesize data, exercise independent judgment, build relationships and create high quality deliverables
Preferred qualification
CPA, Master's degree in Accounting, or MBA
