The Sergeant position is responsible for supervising police officers and security personnel in their shift. The Police Sergeant directs officers in policing and assists leadership in ensuring a safe campus environment. This position assigns duties to subordinates, directs, monitors, and evaluates the work of shift officers. The Police Sergeant conducts patrols, assists in investigations, and reviews reports.

Work involves knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, in addition to policies and procedures of the Board of Regents of the State of Georgia, Georgia College & State University, and the department of Public Safety. Employees assigned to this position must be able to demonstrate the ability to exercise independent judgment and decision making within the limits prescribed by laws, rules, regulation, policies, and procedures.
Work requires dedication to public service, which is often accompanied by emotional and/or physical stress from rapidly evolving events. The employee must be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

Supervision - 25

Serves as a first-line supervisor for a squad of Police Officers at the direction of the Lieutenant of Patrol.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

• Scheduling and assigning duties/ responsibilities for the squad
• Facilitating squad coverage in the event of training, illness, vacation or other absence
• Providing guidance on policies and practices
• Facilitating standardized performance among personnel assigned to the squad
• Conduct daily shift briefing that includes pass-on information, roll call training and a review of campus events and activities
• Conduct evaluations for assigned officers
• Make recommendations in matters concerning discipline and commendations for assigned officers
• Notify immediate supervisor and/or Command Staff personnel of any issues or concerns that require immediate attention
• Review and approve incident and accident reports for assigned personnel to ensure accuracy and completeness
• Conduct and document routine inspections of assigned officer's uniforms, equipment and vehicles

Patrol - 25

• Conduct routine vehicle, foot, bicycle, and alternative patrol of Georgia College & State University properties, and the surrounding area pursuant to statutory jurisdictions.
• Such patrol shall facilitate the detection and deterrence of crime, criminal activity, and suspicious activity for Georgia College & State University properties.

Law Enforcement - 15

• This position requires employees to utilize sound discretion and decision-making skills when determining appropriate responses to violations of federal, state, local, and traffic laws.

Reporting - 15

• Provide adequate documentation of public safety actions, including the authoring of incident reports, arrest and booking reports, use of force reports, supplemental reports, traffic citations, and other documents related to safety and security initiatives on campus. Such documentation may include written reports, diagrams, sketches, and other representations of reported circumstances.

Safety and Security - 10

• Perform relevant safety and security functions that enhance public safety within the Georgia College & State University community.
• Such functions include: developing positive police-community relations, facilitating the physical security of campus properties, the performance of first-aid in response to medical distress, and the enhancement of emergency response to a variety of natural and man-made hazards.

Other - 10

• Other Duties as Assigned.

Required Experience

• Must have minimum 4 years of related experience in the public safety field OR a combination of educational attainment and related work history

Educational Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Other Required Qualifications

• Must be able to successfully pass a comprehensive background check, pursuant to the regulations of Georgia College & State University, the Board of Regents Police Guidebook and recommendations from the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police. Requirements will include, at a minimum: an oral interview, a state and federal criminal history check, a nationwide sex offender search, a social security number check, a credit history check, a medical examination, a drug screening, a psychological screening, a polygraph examination, an employment history check, and the verification of at least three professional/personal references.
• Must possess a valid driver's license, or the ability to obtain a valid driver's license.
• Must possess and maintain certification as a peace officer pursuant to the rules of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (said rules may be found at https://www.gapost.org/Rules/3offcrt.html)

Preferred Qualifications

• Preferred attainment of an Associates Degree or Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
• Military experience (Military Police experience will be considered)
• Preferred experience in a higher education environment
• Preferred completion of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College Program, Georgia POST
• Supervision courses, or other supervision/management training equivalent
• General Instructor (Firearms, FTO and Sexual Assault Investigation Training)

Knowledge

• Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, criminal and traffic codes, search and seizure laws
• Knowledge of principles and modern methods of law enforcement administration
• Knowledge of principles of employee supervision and personnel management including training, developing, mentoring, and disciplining of personnel
• Knowledge of the court system and judicial procedures
• Knowledge of traffic investigation techniques and procedures

Skills

• Skilled in operating police vehicles, firearms, emergency equipment, and other standard and specialized law enforcement equipment
• Skilled in interrogation and interviewing techniques
• Skilled in using computers for word processing
• Skill in furnishing first aid in the event accident, illness, injury, and use of force situations, to include CPR and the use of an AED
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
