Job OverviewUnder the supervision of the Payroll Manager, the Payroll Accountant performs a variety of duties related to the processing of payroll. Ensures all payroll procedures are compliant with federal and state regulations. Strives for accuracy, reliability, timeliness, and compliance with GPA policies. Conducts business with integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
Upholds the values of the GPA to promote Safety, Integrity, Respect, Community, Creativity and Opportunity. Promotes a safe work environment by participating in safety initiatives and reporting unsafe conditions and behaviors.
Job Duties
  • Processes both hourly (weekly) and salaried (semi-monthly) payrolls as well as special off cycle payroll runs.
  • Checks all time cards and sheets to ensure proper coding for labor, vacation, sick leave, overtime, etc. and verifies total hours.
  • Review and process hourly and salaried employee personnel action forms.
  • Verify and audit employee payroll deductions for benefits, pension, taxes, etc.
  • Processes off-line checks and manual payroll checks. Distributes checks and direct deposit notices.
  • Prepares funding requests for salaried, hourly, and special run payroll distributions.
  • Responsible for hourly and salaried employee garnishment disbursements serving as contact for federal and state departments.
  • Ensures compliance with supplemental wage requirements including benefits, bonuses, gift cards, awards, etc.
  • Reconciles monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll reports for federal and state labor and tax requirements.
  • Provides support for open records release requests.
  • Completes verifications of employment and wage statements for worker’s compensation, etc.
  • Actively identifies areas for process improvement and makes recommendations to management.
  • Actively monitors for changes/updates to federal and state labor regulations and report to management.
  • Support, as necessary, other areas in Finance such as Accounts Payable.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
Job RequirementsKnowledge, Skills, & AbilitiesExtensive knowledge of payroll processes as well as labor regulations and laws. Ensures confidentiality and privacy of all employees. Knowledge of general accounting principles and practices. Ability to read, understand, and transcribe a variety of numeric/alphanumeric data. Ability to use calculator and Microsoft Excel required. Ability to deal effectively and professionally with the GPA staff on all levels as well as customers and the general public required.
Experience
  • Experience in accounting, auditing, or related field: Preferred
  • Previous payroll experience: Required
  • Some experience in accounting: Required
Education
  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
Licenses & Certifications
  • TWIC - Transportation Worker Identification Credential Required Upon Hire
  • Driver's License - Valid state driver's license Required Upon Hire
