Key Responsibilities
Foster an Inclusive Environment: Create a classroom atmosphere that is welcoming to all students, encouraging a sense of belonging and community. Actively work to validate students’ individual strengths and address microaggressions to support their growth.
Teach Diverse Content: Deliver engaging lessons in English Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science, aligned with the adopted curriculum. Ensure your lesson plans and instructional materials reflect diverse perspectives throughout the year.
Utilize Best Practices: Implement effective instructional strategies using models, discussions, reflective writing, and technology. Apply authentic assessment methods and provide feedback that mitigates stereotype threats.
Assess and Support Students: Administer various diagnostic assessments and provide targeted individual and small group instruction based on student needs. Maintain detailed records to inform progress reports and grading.
Collaborate and Plan: Work closely with fellow educators, therapists, and specialists to integrate educational and therapeutic approaches. Co-plan with general educators to ensure inclusive instruction.
Manage Behavior: Employ culturally informed behavior management techniques, using positive guidance such as redirection, modeling, and praise to support all students.
Engage with Families: Develop and maintain respectful, supportive relationships with students’ families, recognizing the diverse backgrounds and needs of each family.
Professional Development: Actively seek and participate in ongoing professional development to enhance your skills and stay current with best practices.
Supervise and Support: Oversee students during out-of-classroom activities and assist with emergency procedures. Provide guidance and feedback to teacher assistants as needed.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's Degree with valid special education teacher certification or the ability to obtain it.
Cultural Competence: Demonstrate an understanding of racism and privilege, and actively incorporate representative history into teaching. Address and discuss inequities and racism as they arise.
Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with others, actively listen, share perspectives, and respectfully disagree.
Organizational Skills: Strong skills in managing classroom schedules and developing effective teaching and assessment strategies.
Communication: Culturally sensitive communication skills, with an ability to connect with students and families from diverse backgrounds.
