Associate Scientist -- On-site in Gaithersburg, MD

Job Summary:
We are seeking an Associate Scientist to join our laboratory team in Gaithersburg, MD. This is a lab-based role focused on protein purification, where you will perform experimental work to high standards and support our bioscience research. The position is 100% onsite, and you will collaborate closely with other scientists, depending on their guidance and direction. This role is ideal for recent graduates with a background in chemical engineering, microbiology, or biochemistry who are eager to gain hands-on lab experience.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
The position resides in the Purification Process Sciences group (PPS) within the Bioprocess Development R&D (BPD) department. Members of the PPS function work closely with other development functions and manufacturing sciences to develop and transfer clinical and commercial purification processes. Position may require weekend work and/or periodic late-nights. Main duties are as follows:
• Design, development, and optimization of downstream processes for the manufacture of biopharmaceuticals in early and late stage development.
• Evaluation and development of new technologies to facilitate process development and increase purification process efficiency.
• Performing purifications for complex biopharmaceutical drugs such as antibodies, Multispecific antibodies, fusion proteins, pDNA, and viruses
• Performing studies to develop scalable purification processes and assist is tech transfer activities
• Solving challenging protein purification problems
• Coordinating closely with the research department, cell culture group, and analytical biotechnology group in order to meet project timelines and company goals
• Conducting pilot scale purifications in support of process development activities and support development studies
• Maintain accurate records of data and actively participate in laboratory organization
• Professionally deliver results to internal and external audiences
• Supervision: Should be able to function with limited supervision and is expected to work independently on a day-to-day basis. Expectation for independence will increase with time and experience in the position.
Relevant Education & Experience Requirements:
BS/BA or MS/MA biology, biochemistry, chemical/biochemical engineering, or related field
Research Associate I: BS 0 years experience
Research Associate II: BS 2 years experience, MS 0 years experience
Required Skills:
• Highly team-oriented, energetic, critical thinker, organized, capable of multitasking with excellent oral and written skills
• Knowledge of
o Basic Protein Chemistry
o Protein Chromatography
o Basic Analytical Techniques (HPLC and SDS-PAGE Analyses)
o Data analysis, Statistics, and DOE techniques and software
Desired Skills:
• Experience performing protein chromatography using AKTA/AKTA software
• Experience performing analytical testing and HPLC analysis
• Purification Process Design for protein therapeutics
• Troubleshoot and collaboratively resolve complex problems under tight time constraints
