General Description:

The Lactation Consultant is responsible for the promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding, in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team. S/he assists with inpatient lactation program development and provides direct patient care.

Essential Functions:

• Assesses the patient’s educational and support needs upon entry into the Maternal Child System (including First Born Program and Private Physician Practices).
• Plans nursing care based on the biophysical, psychosocial, and medical needs of the patient involving the patient and the family as much as possible.
• Communicates the condition and status of patient to all caregivers responsible for the patient.
• Promotes breastfeeding within the hospital as well as within the community.
• Serves as a clinical resource to all units within the hospital.
• Reviews and assists with the development of hospital policies related to breastfeeding.
• Plans and implements educational opportunities for staff regarding breastfeeding.
• Keeps Director informed of activities related to the Lactation Program via reports or phone contact in a timely, accurate manner.

Education and Training Requirements:

• Current New Mexico or Multi-State Licensure
• International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
• BLS (AHA)
• NRP within 3 months from hire date
• ACLS (AHA) preferred
• ALSO certification preferred
• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related Health Care Field preferred
• Experience in inpatient lactation programs and/or knowledge of breastfeeding preferred
• One (1) year nursing experience preferred
