Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare is Hiring an Education Specialist - Surgical Services Near Saint Paul, MN

1.0 FTE/ Day Shift-Flexible! Surgical Services Education Specialist position. Responsibilities include onboarding, competency management, and professional development for Surgical Services department staff, supporting ongoing educational needs for the Surgical Services department, and serving the larger clinical education needs of the organization. MUST HAVE OR EXPERIENCE.
The Education Specialist promotes excellence in patient care through ongoing preparation and development of competent, caring and compassionate team members through the utilization of the Nursing Professional Development Practice Model from the Association of Nursing Professional Development. The Education Specialist oversees patient care delivery and leadership of staff education, which maximizes outcomes in a manner consistent with the hospital and department's mission, philosophies, and in accordance with professional practice standards.
Education specialists have a department specific view and role. They coordinate annual assessment of department needs, develop annual education plans for department and facilitate student experience. Additionally, they are responsible for defining and clarifying best practices for their associated care areas, and incorporating those best practices into organizational workflows. They practice under the Nursing Professional Development Practice Model from the Association of Nursing Professional Development.

Compensation and Benefits:
The annual salary range for this opportunity is $106,67272.61 to $151,028, with a median salary of $125,840. Pay is dependent on several factors including relevant work experience and internal equity. Salary is just one component of the compensation package for employees. Core Responsibilities and Duties
Patient Care - Leads by Example, the Nursing Process & Quality Improvement Program. Consults and collaborates with providers and nursing staff on the management and implementation of patient care to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Leads and supports staff in creation of individualized care plans that are evidence based.
  • Responsible for oversight of department quality improvement program.
  • Leads patient safety work and is accountable for data collection and timely reporting of the quality indicators.
  • Fosters accountability and promotes transparency through effective quality improvement reporting systems.
  • Identifies key quality indicators for monitoring and evaluating services.
Family Centered Care - Supervises and leads nursing care and health education reflecting specific patient, family, cultural and community needs.
  • Identifies the learning needs of the population served. Incorporated social, and behavioral factors in the plan of patient care.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of health education as culturally and developmentally appropriate.
  • Formulates strategies to promote health in a safe environment.
  • Facilitates positive resolutions to concerns with respect to the individuality of patients and families.
Autonomous Practice - Influences care and demonstrates understanding of potential clinical implications.
  • Facilitates accomplishment of organizational strategies and unit objectives.
  • Plans and executes a comprehensive orientation for new staff members.
  • Develops and implements an annual departmental education plan in collaboration with the dept manager.
  • Assesses effectiveness and modifies the department educational plan as indicated.
  • Fosters an educational environment to encourage sharing of expertise and differing perspectives of the healthcare team.
  • Monitors compliance and maintains staff records of on-going clinical competencies and required training.
  • Holds staff accountable for performance expectations and addresses performance issues in collaboration with department leadership.
  • Provides evidence of ongoing active membership and engagement in professional organization applicable to the work. Encourages others to participate professionally.
  • Identifies opportunities to submit articles, proposals for presentation or poster sessions to internal and/or external audiences by means of a professional educational event or publication.
  • Utilizes the scientific base of knowledge in practice through the application and support of research.
Procedures and policies - Identifies, interprets, and implements organizational policies and procedures according to regulatory, professional and community standards.
  • Reviews, revises and implements policies and procedures supporting the practice of nursing.
Active Engagement - Actively represents the department in committees, task forces, unit activities or other work groups and disseminates information and decisions to colleagues and peers. This includes attending a minimum of 75% of department staff meetings.
  • Leads, chairs and co-chairs various engagement activities.
  • Presents and leads discussions at staff meetings.
  • Provides meaningful contributions to the productivity of the professional environment of the department and the Nursing Collaborative Governance model.
  • Engages in inter-professional collaboration across multiple service sites and organizations.
  • Supports the nursing staff through communication and resources related to the work of Nursing Collaborative Governance.
  • Attend a minimum of 75% of staff meetings.
  • Attend a minimum of 75% of committee meetings.
Participates in activities that promote professional growth, ease of access, quality improvement and patient satisfaction.
Qualifications
Required
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license through the MN Board of Nursing
  • Documentation of completion of a professional nursing program (RN program)
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or other healthcare related field
  • Master's Degree completed or in-progress with expected completion within 3 years of start in position
  • Three years of recent nursing experience as a registered nurse
  • Current certification in CPR-BLS for Health Care Providers by the American Heart Association
  • Current American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is required of educators who work in the PICU, who are cross-trained in the PICU, and Perianesthesia nurses providing direct patient care
Preferred
  • Doctoral preparation
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must demonstrate successful leadership skills and have prior training or facilitation experience
  • Must be interested in working with people with short-term or long-term disabilities that begin in childhood
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Physically able to work hours required and physically able to transport patients
