Inspire Girls To Take On The World's Greatest Challenges!

Position: STEM CREW (After School Program Leader)

Reports to: California Program Coordinator

Classification: Paid, Part-Time, 5-10 hours/week

About Girlstart

Founded in 1997, Girlstart's mission is to increase girls' interest and engagement in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through innovative, nationally recognized informal STEM education programs. Girlstart's year-round programs inspire girls to transform our world. These programs include after school, week-long summer camps, community STEM programs, and an annual girls conference. Girlstart provides After School programs in multiple cities across Texas, Boston, MA, and the South Bay Area, CA.

Job Description

Girlstart is seeking multiple After School Program Leaders (called STEM CREW --Creative, Resourceful, Empowered Workforce) to lead our fun, hands-on, STEM-focused After School programs across the South Bay area (in Sunnyvale, Milpitas, and Redwood City). Our After School programs meet once a week for 1 hour and 15 minutes immediately after the school day. The purpose of our after school program is to provide 20-25 girls with a fun, free STEM enrichment program that builds confidence and encourages them to pursue paths to higher education and to discover greater career opportunities. This is a great opportunity to work directly with 4th-5th grade girls empowering them in science, technology, engineering, and math activities.

Commitment & Days and Times

We prefer After School Program Leaders be available at least 1 afternoon (Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Friday) a week to lead one program, with the option to lead 2 programs if there is interest and availability.* Potential Program Leaders need to be available around 1:30pm on program days; programs typically run from 2:00-3:30pm at respective elementary schools, so STEM CREW are expected to be available until around 5pm.

Girlstart's After School Program Leader commitment varies depending on the amount of clubs a Program Leader is willing to lead. Leading 1 After School program is approximately a 2-hour weekly commitment, which includes being prepared for the lesson, driving to location, leading the activity, and cleaning up. In addition to the 2 hours, Program Leaders are encouraged to have 1-2 office hours to practice the lesson of the week, organize materials, and ask questions about the activity and/room management. For example, leading 1 or 2 clubs requires a commitment of 5-10 hours/week.

Hours can increase based on how many clubs led. The number of clubs a Program Leader is assigned will depend on Girlstart's needs and individual availability each semester.
