Under general supervision, contributes to a positive hospital experience by providing therapeutic leisure activities during a hospital stay. Works collaboratively with the care team to develop treatment goals. Assesses needs of patients taking into consideration each child's family, culture and stage of development. Evaluates leisure functioning and interests to provide patients and their families with a variety of developmental and therapeutic opportunities in order to minimize stress and anxiety, and promote positive coping. Reports to the manager of child life.
Assessment & Planning:
Assess the coping responses and leisure needs of assigned patients. Plan and coordinate appropriate developmental, therapeutic and leisure opportunities for the patient during the hospital stay, taking into consideration the patient's interests, family, culture and stage of development.
Therapeutic Interventions:
Minimize stress and anxiety and promote positive coping by providing developmentally appropriate activities 1:1 and in group settings that encourage self-expression and engagement. Maintain appropriate supply of therapeutic materials.
Healthcare Team:
Develop treatment goals in collaboration with the healthcare team. Effectively communicate observations, assessments and recommendations for care through verbal and written channels. Document care and services provided in the patient's chart according to documentation standards.
Environment:
Assist in the maintenance of a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.
Education:
Develop and maintain own knowledge and understanding of the medical conditions and healthcare experiences of assigned patient populations. Develop resources and provide education for team members. Orient, supervise and provide input into the evaluation of students and hospital volunteers as appropriate. Participate in professional development and maintain therapeutic recreation certification.
Advocacy:
Advocate for patient and family needs and activate appropriate resources and referrals as needed.
Demonstrates knowledge of the age-related differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families.
Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the CONNECTICUT CHILDREN'S STANDARDS.
Education/Experience:
* Minimum Requirement: Bachelor's Degree with concentration in recreational therapy (therapeutic recreation) or similar field. Master's Degree with concentration in recreational therapy (therapeutic recreation) preferred.
* Experience working with infants through young adults required.
* Experience in a behavioral health setting preferred.
License/Certifications:
* Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist (CTRS) designation as issued by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) required upon hire or attained within first year in role.
