Goodwill of Greater Washington is Hiring a Student Culture and Resource Specialist Near Washington, DC

Overview

The Student Culture and Resource Specialist (SCRS) ensures that the school campus is safe and responsive for all students while working to create proactive solutions to keep students engaged and on track towards their goals. The SCRS is a key resource to staff in addressing student behavior and models how to build strong and supportive relationships with students and staff. The SCRS supports the key operations of the school day to ensure a safe and secure environment. Additionally, the SCRS works in collaboration with the relevant staff members to develop student support plans in response to student needs. The SCRS works alongside the School Director to implement any discipline and mediation next steps in alignment with the Student Handbook. This position requires a creative mindset on how best to support students and an understanding of how to collaborate with others to create intentional student support plans. This position is responsible and will be held accountable for behaving in accordance with divisional and organizational RISE values and expectations.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Monitoring the physical building including, but not limited to hallway walk throughs, student bathrooms and common spaces, classroom walk throughs, lunchtime supervision, surrounded school grounds, and facilitating bag checks as determined by the Director.

2. Proactively identifies students in need of extra support through observation in the school, regular check ins with teachers, coaches, and other GEC staff members, as well as iExcel orientation.

3. Supports the enrollment process through participating in iExcel orientations, meeting with returning students, and mid-term iExcel classes.

4. Responds to student incidents and student crises and uses de-escalation strategies to ensure a safe and secure environment.

5. Implements student discipline actions outlined by Director (such as collecting incident reports, completing log notes, scheduling re-entry and re-engagement meetings, outreach calls, collecting work for students) that align to the Student Handbook.

6. Facilitates mediations (student and student, student and staff) and develops and implements a follow-up plan for monitoring and support.

7. Serves as a key resource for GEC staff who express student concerns related to behavior and is responsible for coordinating and communicating appropriate responses.

8. Participates in the Student Support Team (SST) meetings and process and supports with creating, implementing, and monitoring support plans.

9. Identifies student support needs and barriers and proposes internal and external resources that can serve the students and school (ie: leading student support groups, lunch and learns, external resources and programs).

10. Collaborates with the Director to determine campus and student needs for the day and the week to support the learning environment.

11. Other job duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s Degree.

2. A minimum of 2 years of experience in a school, social work, counseling, advising, academic guidance, community services or related field.

3. Must possess the ability to address and resolve conflict with a restorative justice mindset and facilitate mediations between school community members (students and staff).

4. Must possess ability to collect, interpret, and synthesize information about a student’s social history, community environment, family dynamics, economic differences, and significant crises that influence academic and behavioral functioning.

5. Must have demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as an interdisciplinary team member and devise an appropriate service plan for referred students and families.

6. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication, time management and organization skills, and have attention to detail.

7. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community agencies, students, families, team members, and others.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Master’s degree or a certification in social work, psychology, or a human service-related discipline.

2. More than two years of experience in a school, social work, counseling, advising, academic guidance, community services or related field.

3. Experience in facilitating and/or offering family counseling, rehabilitation counseling, student counseling/ personnel services, mental health and human services, individual/ family development, family and community services.

4. Experience working with high school-aged students or adults in a nontraditional setting strongly preferred.
