Qualifications


POSITION SUMMARY
The Safety Specialist is primarily responsible for driving the company safety program in assigned locations. This person will help create a highly visible safety culture and promote safety and healthy workplace environment for Goodwill workforce members and the public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct regular inspections of assigned locations to perform safety observations for compliance with State and Federal safety rules and regulations. Identify potential safety and compliance issues and determine appropriate corrective actions.
  2. Perform ergonomic and health hazard evaluations, to identify and evaluate risk within the work environment. Assist in identifying solutions to enhance safety.
  3. Ensure monthly emergency drills are conducted and documented at assigned locations.
  4. Coordinate with assigned business units to ensure fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems receive monthly and annual inspections, licenses, and are prepared for surprise audits.
  5. In assigned locations, ensure compliance to regulatory requirements such as OSHA, TCEQ, and other health and safety agencies.
  6. Respond to OSHA inquiries and investigations.
  7. Develop and present safety training to new hires for the agency, post-accident situations, proper equipment use, emergency drills, and procedure changes and/or updates.
  8. Provide support to warehouse personnel with management of household chemicals. Make recommendations on appropriate programs to minimize environmental impact from the disposal of donated household chemicals.
  9. Support and oversight of battery management program for the agency. Assess program compliance and make recommendations for continuous improvement to the program and execution.
  10. Oversee compliance to driver safety standards. Develops audit tools to quantify compliance and insures successful execution to regulations related to driver safety. Monitors vehicle tracking programs for branded company vehicles to insure compliance and coaching occur as needed.
  11. Investigate reports of accidents and works with management in initiating preventive measures to avoid further incidents.
  12. Research and keeps abreast of new Government safety standards as well as internal safety results and suggests policy and/or procedure change recommendations to Risk Unit management.
  13. Provide overall support to the business unit including administrative duties.
  14. Responsible for providing excellent customer service by greeting, assisting, and responding to questions and/or concerns in a positive, professional, and friendly manner.

REQUIREMENTS

  • High School diploma or equivalency diploma.
  • Associate’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related fields preferred.
  • 3 years’ experience in a Safety Specialist role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to effectively collaborate with multiple business units and position levels to achieve desired results.
  • Advanced skills in implementing and maintaining facility access, fire detection, emergency and CCTV technology, as well as use of MS Office-Word, PPT, and Excel.
