Goshen Community Schools is Hiring a GHS Talon Sponsor (School Newspaper) Near Goshen, IN

The following vacancy exists in Goshen Community Schools for the 2024-25 school year:
Goshen High SchoolTalon Sponsor (School Newspaper)The High School Newspaper Sponsor oversees the production and publication of the school's newspaper. The sponsor guides students in creating journalistic content, manages the editorial process, and ensures the newspaper adheres to journalistic standards. The sponsor fosters a learning environment that promotes student engagement, creativity, and critical thinking.
Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise the school newspaper's planning, writing, editing, and layout.
  • Ensure all content meets journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness, and balance.
  • Guide students in selecting and developing relevant and engaging stories for the school community.
  • Mentor students in journalistic techniques, including research, interviewing, writing, and editing.
  • Provide instruction on the principles of journalism, including ethics, media law, and the role of the press in society.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment where students feel empowered to express their ideas.
  • Oversee the logistics of newspaper production, including deadlines, budgeting, and printing.
  • Coordinate with printers, web developers, and other vendors as necessary.
  • Ensure the timely and regular publication of the newspaper, whether in print or online.
  • Maintain records of all activities and financial transactions related to the newspaper.
  • Communicate with school administration, faculty, and parents about the newspaper’s activities and achievements.
  • Encourage student participation in journalism competitions and conferences.
  • Promote the newspaper within the school and the broader community to increase readership and engagement.
  • Facilitate interactions between student journalists and professional journalists or guest speakers.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, Education, or a related field.
  • Teaching certification.
  • Experience in journalism or media production, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with high school students and staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience sponsoring a high school newspaper or similar student publication.
  • Proficiency with desktop publishing software (e.g., Adobe InDesign) and online content management systems.
  • Familiarity with current trends in journalism and media literacy.
SALARY: Per extracurricular schedule (Group #9) and experience
