GRAND FORKS PUBLIC SCHOOLS is Hiring a 50% School-Within-A-School Teacher and 50% Detention Center Near Grand Forks, ND

Education: Bachelor’s Degree

Qualifications: Must have or be eligible for a North Dakota teaching license in qualified area. Alternate licensure an option for non-teaching licensed professionals.

Job Summary: The teacher in the school-within-a-school (SWIS) program will work closely with a small group of students who may be challenged by anxiety or behaviors that make traditional school difficult. Teachers will provide academic support for students taking online classes within the SWIS program, as well as traditional face-to-face classes in the high school. The SWIS teacher will actively monitor student progress, helping to address gaps as needed. Programs/curriculums will be utilized to help students develop skills, manage decision-making, and address unsolved problems. Communication with the school MTSS coordinator, school psychologist, counselors, teachers, and administrators will be important.

The teacher serving the detention center will do so in a highly supervised and secure environment where one-on-one instruction will be provided to adolescents in temporary detention. The teacher will work on academic skills aligned to student needs, as well as provide social-emotional support and mentorship to students while in placement.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Meets assigned students at the times designated by the immediate supervisor.
  • Develops and maintains a learning environment that reflects the teacher's unique talents and skills and, at the same time, meets the district's objectives within the limits of available resources.
  • Prepares for assigned classes / student tutoring sessions and provides required documentation, preparation, and implementation on request of the immediate supervisor.
  • Assists the administration in implementing policies and/or rules governing student conduct, develops reasonable rules for behavior, and maintains order in a fair and just manner.
  • Provides effective instruction based on the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved. This should include, but are not limited to: a) Review of previously taught material, as needed; b) Presentation of new material; c) Use of a variety of teaching materials and techniques; d) Evaluation of student progress on a regular basis.
  • Correlates individual instructional objectives with the philosophy, goals, and objectives stated for the district and/or a unique student’s needs.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Seeks assistance for students with special needs.
  • Attends and participates in faculty, department, and district meetings as appropriate.
  • Is accessible to students and parents for education related purposes outside the in-school workday, under reasonable terms.
  • Cooperates with other members of the staff and/or district personnel in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students, their families, and appropriate school personnel concerning academic and behavioral progress.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other staff members.
  • Participates in professional growth activities as provided by the District
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication, alongside proficient organizational skills.
  • Utilizes and integrates technology in an efficient and effective manner to enhance the instructional program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and stand. The ability to hear and see in order to communicate effectively as well as communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties; Maintain mental capacity, allowing for effective interaction and communication with others.

Terms of Employment: 188 days contract

Evaluation: By the supervisor at least twice each year in the first three years of service (December 15 & April 15), and at least once each year thereafter (April 15).
