Responsibilities

The Coding Supervisor accurately codes all diagnoses and procedures in the medical record. The Coding Supervisor abstracts relevant information from these medical records. This information forms the basis of a patient information system relating to the clinical care of the patient.
Essential Functions:

• Coordinates the work assignments of coding technicians to ensure completion, accuracy and integrity of medical records.
• Possesses a high-level understanding of the DRG validation procedure, DRG information and CPT guidelines for outpatient and various regulatory guidelines.
• Fosters an environment of teamwork and service excellence within the department by effectively communicating goals, standards and needs of the department and organization.
• Works closely with physicians and appropriate clinical areas to obtain clarifications on diagnoses/procedures and clinical guidelines for coding compliance.
• Provides consultation to other departments regarding coding and documentation requirements.
• Ensures all functional areas of responsibility meet established deadlines and turnaround times.
• Responsible for interviewing, hiring, orienting, training, evaluating and disciplining assigned staff.
• Prepares work schedules, maintaining appropriate coverage. Monitors overtime.
• Performs concurrent and retrospective review of patient charts to ensure optimal and timely coding assignment and appropriate reimbursement. Corrects codes as necessary.
• Develops, implements and maintains a data quality assurance program for coding and reimbursement.
