JOB TITLE: Sleep Technician Trainee

I. JOB SUMMARY:
Performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing and analysis, and associated interventions under the general supervision of a Polysomnographic Technician,
Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), and/or the Medical Director (M.D., D.O.,
Ph.D.), Sleep Disorders Center Manager or designee.

II. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One or more years experience in an allied health profession, such as respiratory therapy or EEG technology or one year of college with anatomy and physiology included.
  • Must successfully develop and demonstrate the skills described in the essential functions within the first 6 months of employment.

III. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proven ability to work independently with only general supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment.

IV. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:

  • Clinic environments with direct patient contact.
  • Risk of exposure to fumes from solvents and cleaning solutions without proper ventilation from vapors, protective eyewear and clothing.

V. WORK CONTACT GROUP:

  • Position routinely has contact with patients and their families, clinic staff, and staff in other departments.

VI. PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to walk; sit; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Regularly required lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to

25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Work pressure from deadlines.

20% 1. Gathers and Analyzes Patient Information: E

  • Reviews history, physical information, medications, procedure request, and study protocol.
  • Completes and verifies documentation.
  • Explains the procedure and orients the patient to the sleep center.

15% 2. Performs Testing Preparation Procedures: E

  • Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary.
  • Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
  • Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments, if necessary
  • Performs routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.

50% 3. Performs Polysomnographic Procedures: E

  • Follows procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test
  • (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc.] to ensure collection of appropriate data.
  • Follows “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.)
  • Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and make adjustments, if necessary.
  • Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  • Implements appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).
  • Follows “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.)
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

5% 4. Performs Polysomnographic Record Scoring: E

  • Assists with scoring sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
  • Assists with scoring clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) with center specific protocols.
  • Assists with the generation of accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
