Associate Veterinarian
The Associate Veterinarian helps oversee the health of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) shelter population and the Critical Care and Spay Neuter Clinic under the leadership of GBHS’ Chief Veterinarian. This position is flexible and may be full-time or part-time. The Associate Veterinarian works with a team of veterinarians and other clinic support staff to continually develop and maintain day-to-day operations of a comprehensive shelter medicine program, externship program that trains 4th year vet students in soft tissue surgery skills, a trap-neuter-return program, and a spay/neuter program for a full-service animal shelter, including but not limited to:

Education Requirement: Minimum of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

The physical demands described here are representative but not all-inclusive of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop kneel, crouch, crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must meet minimum general requirements for GBHS employment as set forth in GBHS employee handbook.
Work Environment
This work is performed in a fast-paced environment. Employees are exposed to numerous animals (live and deceased), including those with uncertain dispositions. Exposure to conditions such as animal feces, urine, etc. and foul odors. May be exposed to industrial cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust animal dander, bites, scratches, parasites, and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals (zoonotic). Must be able to work in an environment that provides humane euthanasia to animals. Employees are required to act in a safe and responsible manner at all times.
