Job Title:School Adjustment Counselor K-12

Department:Special Education

Reports To:Director of Special Education

Job Summary:The Greater Commonwealth Virtual School District seeks a skilled counselor with a growth mindset to join our team of virtual educators. We provide 1250 students in grades K–12 from across the state with an educational option through a virtual school platform. We’re seeking out educators who can apply their unique skill sets to our proven, virtual schooling-from-home model of education. You’ll be doing what you do best, including counseling with individual students and in small groups, while implementing IEP counseling goals. This is a full-time position with the majority of the time working from home.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Duties/Responsibilities:The essential functions or duties listed below are illustrations of the type of work that is performed and is not an exhaustive list of the duties performed for by this position.   • Provide ongoing consultation to teachers and staff regarding teaching students with diverse learning needs 
  • Provide counseling services to students to address issues that are interfering with learning 
  • Conduct occasional psychological inventories and write thorough evaluation reports 
  • including educationally relevant findings and recommendations. 
  • Conduct screenings as requested through General Education Team processes and IEP Team processes.
  • Crisis intervention. Participate as needed in MTSS Teams, Grade level teams, and IEP Teams, and be an active member of a School-Wide Wellness initiative. 
  • Author relevant sections of IEPs and 504 plans 
  • Write quarterly progress reports for IEP students 
  • Documentation of services provided 
  • Work closely with the Evaluation Team Leader, Special Education Director and Assistant, Director on student/family concerns and issues 
  • Test students as necessary during state testing - does involve reimbursed travel 
  • Attend all GCVS professional development workshops (on a prorated basis); 
  • Occasional home visits to families with comprehensive medical and/or mental health needs. 
  • Develop and lead K-12 social skills groups year-round. 
  • Attend multiple IEP Team meetings per week, sometimes multiple at a time. 

Required Skills/Abilities Education and Experience : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. The Superintendent may waive or modify the qualification requirements.   • At least 1 year of experience as a School Adjustment Counselor, in a public school setting or equivalent experience in a community setting; 
  • Certified, or certifiable, as a School Adjustment Counselor in Massachusetts; 
  • A Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, or its equivalent; 
  • A strong background in technology is a must; 
  • Flexibility with respect to caseloads, age groups, and scheduling; 
  • Knowledge of trauma-sensitive education; 
  • Ability to design and run social skills groups; 
  • The ability and desire to do counseling in a virtual interactive platform such as Google Meet or Zoom
  • Availability to attend possible in-person field trips and meetups. 
  • Experience with the following instruments: WIAT3, WISC-V, WJ cognitive and achievement tests, BRIEF2, BASC3, Vineland, TPI.
  • Strong multitasking skills are a must.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with students, families and teachers in a virtual environment.

Physical Requirements:

Minimal to light physical effort is generally required in performing duties in an office environment. This position requires the ability to operate a computer keyboard and standard office equipment at an efficient speed and for lengthy periods of time. This position requires the ability to stand or sit for long periods of time. Ability to travel within and between assigned geographic areas to support students, attend regularly scheduled meetings, and participate in school activities, open houses, and orientations. This employee must be able to see details on a computer. Use their hands to handle, control or feel objects, tools, or controls Employee must be able to effectively communicate with numerous students at once by remote classroom participation including teaching, simultaneous computer work, and hearing and seeing student and teacher responses. Employee must be able to interact with students and teachers in a myriad of situations including outings, video conferencing, face-to-face work, and communication by technology.
