POSITION SUMMARYIn this crucial election year, the Senior Field Organizer, 6-month contract will be critical in building, growing and activating our supporter and volunteer base in key regions throughout the state using electoral, and issue-based organizing campaigns. The Senior Field Organizer will also be responsible for helping to cohere ally support for Greenpeace initiatives in California and for informing organizational strategy with on-the-ground expertise. 
This role is for somebody passionate about strengthening and diversifying the environmental and climate justice movement and who sees people power, built through thoughtful and deliberate organizing and on-the-ground action, as the way to win big lasting change. Preference for candidates with existing ties to their local community and experience building trust in new settings.

The Senior Organizer - California is a 6-month contract, full-time, hybrid, exempt, benefits-eligible position and is based in California with preferred locations including: Central Valley, Los Angeles, Sacramento, or San Francisco/Bay area and with extensive travel within California, estimated as 12-18 days per month for required in-person activities such as; house visits, door knocking, survey collections, coalition/campaign events and meetings with allies. Please note this position requires frequent work outside of normal business hours for volunteer calls, phone banking, house visits, travel and coalition/campaign events. This role reports to the California Climate Director.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy:

  • Develop Supporter-Centered Power-Building Strategy
    • Analyze Greenpeacer survey data and develop strategies to deepen information around supporter base motivations, values, and strategic connections
    • Engage active supporters in key regions across the state and synthesize findings to inform the design of campaign strategy to build people power aimed at phasing out fossil fuels in California as a first mover model for the nation and world

Campaigning and Volunteer Recruitment

  • Deliver Impact for Campaign and Electoral Projects
    • Support our field relational voter/ neighborhood leader contact program in California to defeat big oil at the ballot box, elect climate champions, and develop community-centered climate resilience 
    • Project manage volunteer recruitment efforts across the state and bottomline direct voter contact and distributed organizing events, including in-person and virtual friendbanks, phonebanks, and other group actions or events

Outreach and Engagement:

  • Build and Maintain Sustained Base of Activated Volunteers
    • Implement various organizing tactics to engage our supporters and grow our network of action-oriented volunteers, including 1:1 conversations, phone calls, texting, knocking on doors, house visits, and social media engagement
    • Grow our network of supporters by tapping into their networks using principles of relational organizing and deep canvassing 
    • Maintain a clear process and strategy to escalate volunteers into distributed leadership structures, utilizing the art of leadership escalation 
    • Update, track and maintain volunteer data diligently and regularly

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Foster Positive Team Culture
    • Build a culture of learning and experimentation on the team, leading by example and trying new ways of moving volunteers up our leadership ladder

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum (5) five years of organizing experience through labor, community, electoral or campaigns
  • Experience identifying strategic campaign intervention points informed by our supporters, allies, and local conditions
  • Experience in using multiple field tactics to grow strategic campaign outputs
  • General knowledge of California politics and culture
  • Experience utilizing digital tools to mobilize people -- including CRMs, email, web tools and/or SMS (broadcast or peer-to-peer) desired 
  • Experience working in a diverse workplace and a deep commitment to advancing the values of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • A proven track record of managing groups of volunteers that deliver real-world outcomes

  • Excellent communication skill including the ability to convey information clearly and effectively verbally and in writing to engage, motivate, and train volunteers 
  • Strategic acumen with the ability to translate experiences on the ground and knowledge of local conditions into campaign strategy
  • Problem-Solving skills with the capacity to identify solutions and make informed decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with team members, easily build relationships with allies and volunteers, and resolve conflicts
  • Organizational skills capable of prioritizing tasks, managing time effectively and meeting deadlines.
  • Adaptability and flexibility with a willingness and ability to be agile and adapt to rapidly evolving circumstances
  • Resilience and perseverance in ability to remain solution-based in approach to handling setbacks, overcoming challenges and maintaining motivation in the face of adversity
  • A strong commitment to building a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive movement
  • Passion for mobilizing people and building power for progressive movements

Work Hours, Working Styles, and Additional Benefits:

  • Frequent work outside of normal business hours and/or on weekends required for volunteer calls, trainings, coalition/ campaign events.
  • Based in California, requiring extensive travel within California, an estimated 12-18 days per month

The pay grade for this role is a 3, and the salary anticipated to be within the range of $78,668 - $85,146 will be provided to the successful candidate having met the minimum requirements for the position consistent with reflecting our commitment to maintaining competitive and fair compensation practices.
